RedHawks Tweak Roster, Add Pair of Pitchers

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have made several roster in the past few days including a pair of recent additions to the pitching staff. The club signed RHP Mariel Checo and LHP Jonathan Chudy, released OF Chris Duffy, RHP Chase Boruff and C Michael Leach and placed RHP Jeremy Gooding on the disabled list retroactive to May 19.

Checo, 25, joins the RedHawks after spending six seasons in the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals organizations. In 2014, he appeared in eight games for the Idaho Falls Chukars of the Pioneer League (R). Checo was 0-0 with a 6.18 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 11.0 innings pitched. He was released by the Royals in spring training this year.

In his career, Checo is 9-7 with a 6.06 ERA and four saves in 106 games. In 162.0 innings pitched, he has allowed 109 runs (89 earned) on just 140 hits while striking out 193 batters. Checo was drafted by his hometown Yankees in the 41st round of the 2009 draft out of Norman Thomas High School in New York City.

Chudy, 21, comes to the RedHawks after finishing his college career at Pace University, an NCAA Division II school in Westchester, N.Y. As a senior, he was 4-4 with a 3.71 ERA and one save in 11 games (nine starts). Chudy pitched 53.1 innings and allowed 29 runs (22 earned) on 47 hits while recording 56 strikeouts.

In four years at Pace, Chudy was 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA and two saves. Working primarily as a starters, he allowed 94 runs (71 earned) on 153 hits in 175.2 innings pitched. Chudy struck out 145 batters and walked 86.
