Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
OTTAWA, ON, CA - It was an early wake up call for the Gary South Shore RailCats on Wednesday morning and the RailCats were ready scoring early and often enroute to a 6-4 win over the Ottawa Champions at RCBT Park in Canada.
Playing a 10:05 am central time start the Cats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jon Jones, who returned to the lineup after being sick the last few days doubled off of Ottawa starter Andrew Werner. Zac Mitchell then moved Jones to third with a sac bunt and then Jones came home on a JD Pulfer RBI single.
In the second the Cats struck for two more off of Werner. Michael Vaughn singled then came home on a drive to the gap in right center by Michael Schroeder that went for a double scoring Vaughn from first to make it 2-0. Ryan Brockett moved Schroeder to third with a sac bunt and then Jon Jones brought him home with a sac fly to right field to make it 3-0 South Shore.
In the top of the third the RailCats again scored a pair off Werner. With one out Pulfer reached on an error by Ottawa third baseman Matt Tenaglia. Then with two outs Roger Bernal singled to extend his hitting streak to 11 games to put runners at first and second. Following a double steal Michael Vaughn hit a double down the left field line scoring both runners and making it 5-0.
The Champions got a pair of runs off of Travis McGee in the home half of the fourth. Jon Talley delivered and RBI on a sac fly, while Chris Winder brought another run to cut it to the lead to 6-2. In the seventh the RailCats bought and insurance run when Drew Martinez singled then stole second off of reliever Nick Purdy. Martinez went to third on a wild pitch then came home on Adam Taylor's team leading 8th RBI of the season.
The Champions would follow that half inning up with a two spot in the bottom of the seventh. McGee allowed back to back to back singles before leaving the game. McGee at one point retired eight straight and tossed his first quality start of the season. With Shawn O'Neill in for Gary the Champions got two ground ball fielder's choice RBI to the right side of the infield to cut the lead to 6-4.
In the eighth and ninth the Champions threatened but each time the Cats got out of it including two lead off walks issued by Andy Loomis who then retired the next three to notch the save in the ninth. McGee (1-0) picked up the win, while Loomis notched the save (5) and Ottawa starter Werner fell to (1-2) getting the loss.
