RedHawks Top Zephyrs in Doubleheader
June 16, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
In game one of Wednesday's twin billing, OKC starter Doug Mathis lasted seven innings holding the Zephyrs to just one run and gathering the first complete game outing of the season for Oklahoma City. RedHawks proved to be victorious 4-1.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered in his first plate appearance in the second inning handing Oklahoma City a 1-0 lead. It was Saltalamacchia's second home run in as many at-bats, and his eighth of the year.
The game was knotted at one in the fifth inning. Saltalamacchia led off the inning with a double to left-center field. After a groundout to the right side by Chad Tracy, Andy Jenkins delivered an RBI single to score Salty and break the tie. Jenkins would steal second base, Hernan Iribarren then doubled and OKC was out to a 3-1 lead. After tacking on another run in the sixth inning, the RedHawks secured game two and held a 2-0 series lead.
Doug Mathis ( W, 2-2) was the only RedHawks pitcher to toe the slab going seven innings, scattering nine hits while striking out six, allowing just one run.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia was 2-for-2 ( HR, 2B, 1 RBI), Chad Tracy, Andy Jenkins, and Hernan Iribarren collected and RBI apiece.
In game two of the doubleheader, Oklahoma City erupted with five hits and seven runs in the bottom of the second inning, and Michael Ballard threw the first complete game shutout of the RedHawks season as Oklahoma City swept the twin bill and blanked the Zephyrs in game two 7-0.
Esteban German and Mitch Moreland collected bases loaded doubles in part of a seven-run second inning which was capped off by a Ryan Garko homer, his fifth of the year. That would be all the scoring in the contest as Oklahoma City cruised to their fourth consecutive win, and three games to none lead in the series.
Michael Ballard (W, 4-4) pitched the best outing of his 2010 season on Wednesday night. Out of the first thirteen batters faced, Ballard was ahead 0-1 in the count to nine of them. The left-hander lasted seven innings, striking out eight, and sent the Zephyr's to 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Oklahoma City and New Orleans will conclude their four-game set Thursday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Guillermo Moscoso (3-2, 3.80) and TBA are slated to pitch for the RedHawks and Zephyrs respectively with a first pitch set for 7:05 pm.
