Chase Wright Tosses One-Hit Shutout for Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Left-hander Chase Wright tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 9-0 rout of the division-leading Memphis Redbirds on Wednesday evening at historic Greer Stadium.

Wright (5-3) allowed only Jon Jay's game-opening single in his third career shutout and first since 2007. He walked four batters and struck out four in his 111-pitch effort.

The complete-game shutout was the first by a Nashville hurler in four seasons, dating back to an Adam Pettyjohn seven-hit gem on July 30, 2007.

Third baseman Mat Gamel homered and drove in four runs as part of a 2-for-4 night to lead the Nashville offensive effort. The prospect continues to swing a hot bat, hitting .350 (28-for-80) over his last 21 contests.

The win was the fifth shutout of the year for Nashville (35-31), which pulled back within a game of the division lead with its second straight victory.

Gamel propelled the Sounds to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when he lined a two-run homer to right off Memphis starter Evan MacLane. Trent Oeltjen, who preceded Gamel by drawing a walk, also scored on the infielder's second homer of the year for Nashville.

Oeltjen smacked his fifth homer of the year in the bottom of the sixth, an opposite-field shot to left-center off MacLane, to up the Nashville advantage to 3-0.

Nashville pushed across six more runs in the seventh to increase the lead to 9-0, plating the first four scores without a hit after the bases were loaded against a pair of inaccurate Memphis hurlers.

With the bags full and one out, MacLane hit catcher Martin Maldonado with a pitch to force home Brendan Katin, who had doubled to open the frame. The Memphis lefty then walked Wright on five pitches to bring Erick Almonte plateward.

Rich Hill took over on the Memphis hill and fared no better, walking Norris Hopper and Oeltjen consecutively to force in two more runs as the patient Sounds kept their bats on their shoulders.

Gamel followed with a two-run single up the middle to make it a 9-0 contest and up his RBI total to four on the night.

Memphis outfielder Mark Shorey took the hill to pitch the eighth inning for the visitors and worked around three walks to toss a scoreless frame.

MacLane (4-4) took the loss for the Redbirds after allowing eight runs in his 6 1/3 innings.

The teams wrap up the series with a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday night, when it will be Throwback Thursday at Greer Stadium.

Right-hander Mike Jones (0-0, 0.71) will take the hill for the Sounds in the opening contest to face Memphis right-hander Lance Lynn (4-4, 4.13). Neither team has announced its starter for the second contest of the twinbill.
