Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks used four home runs, including two by first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke, to help dispatch the Gary SouthShore RailCats 14-6 on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
The RedHawks (21-12) received a strong performance from starting pitcher Scott Fogelson (4-1). The lefty tossed six innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three.
Fargo-Moorhead broke the game open in the fifth inning, starting with back-to-back solo homers from Nic Jackson and Hoorelbeke. After Cory Patton singled and Eric Campbell walked, catcher Alan Rick launched the third RedHawk dinger of the inning and staked Fogelson to a 7-2 lead.
Fargo-Moorhead sent ten batters to the plate and tacked on six more runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Jay Cox plated two with an RBI single and right fielder Mike Coles drove in a pair with a double.
Down 14-2, the RailCats (20-17) took advantage of control problems by RedHawks closer Donnie Smith and scored four runs in the top half of the ninth inning. Smith hit the first two batters he faced and then walked the next three before being pulled by manager Doug Simunic. Adam Tollefson came on to close out the RailCats.
Gary pitchers issued nine walks on the afternoon, including six from starter Nolan Nicholson in four innings of work. Reliever James Baker (1-2) gave up five runs on five hits over two innings and was saddled with the loss.
Alan Rick was 3-for-5 for Fargo-Moorhead while Coles, Carlo Cota, Jackson, Hoorelbeke and Jay Cox all had a pair of hits. Hoorelbeke leads the Northern League with 13 home runs.
RailCats catcher Yuki Matsumoto drove in two with an RBI single in the second inning before having to leave the game in the fourth after a collision at home plate with Coles.
The RedHawks will continue their home stand tomorrow night and welcome Rockford to Newman Outdoor Field. Gary will return home to take on Joliet.
