RedHawks shut out Schaumburg for series sweep

FARGO, N.D. - Fargo-Moorhead tied a season-high six-game winning streak and completed a three-game series sweep of Schaumburg on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field as the RedHawks shut out the Flyers, 3-0, in front of 3,780.

Mark Michael was the third RedHawks pitcher in as many days to carry the team with a strong outing on the mound. Michael threw 7.1 innings of shutout baseball before giving way Josh Gray who picked up his third save of the season. The win, credited to Michael, was his first in six attempts with his last victory coming on June 26. With the win Michael improved to 7-4 on the season and lowered his earned run average to 4.06.

Offensively the RedHawks started out strong hitting the ball well, but were unable to plate any runs until the fifth inning. Fargo-Moorhead pushed one across in each the fifth, sixth and eighth innings while collecting 13 hits along the way. Harry Berrios drove in the game winning run with his RBI single in the fourth inning that scored Jesse Hoorelbeke from third base.

Five of the RedHawks starters, including Joe Mathis, Brent Krause, Hoorelbeke, Richard Austin and Craig Ringe, each had two hits in the game. Krause, despite striking out three times in his first three at-bats, battled back with a single and a double in his last two at-bats to plate Fargo-Moorhead's final two runs.

The shutout of Schaumburg by the RedHawks was the fifth shutout of the season for Fargo-Moorhead now sits just a half a game behind Winnipeg with the Goldeyes still scheduled to play tonight.

The RedHawks (11-8, 43-24) will enjoy a day off before heading to Winnipeg to begin a three-game series with the Goldeyes on Friday. All the action can be heard with RedHawks play-by-play announcer Scott Miller on 970 AM WDAY. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

NOTES: With his single in the fifth inning Harry Berrios extended his current hitting streak to 10 games. During the three-game sweep of the Flyers the RedHawks combined for a .323 batting average while the pitching staff compiled a 0.67 ERA and held Schaumburg to a .128 batting average. Over the entire six-game homestand the RedHawks went 6-0 and had a .284 batting average with a 1.74 ERA.
