Joliet JackHammers News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS-The Joliet JackHammers and Kansas City T-Bones game was suspended in the fifth inning due to torrential rains and severe thunderstorms at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The JackHammers led the game 6-5. The game will be completed next week when the T-Bones visit Silver Cross Field for a four-game series August 7-10 because the JackHammers do not visit Kansas City again this season. The JackHammers have yet to announce a completion date for Wednesday's game.
The JackHammers started off the game by scoring two runs on three hits against Kansas City starter Hank Woodman. Mike Goss (2-3) led off the game with a single to left field. He went to third when Blake Gill (1-3) smoked a double to right centerfield. Melvin Nieves (0-2) walked to load the bases.
Rob Stratton hit a sacrifice fly to score Goss and give Joliet a 1-0 lead. Mikael Jova (1-2) responded with an RBI single to score Gill and increase the JackHammers lead to 2-0.
Joliet starter Kevin Cheppenko gave up three runs in the first inning. Kansas City took a one run lead at 3-2 after the first inning.
The JackHammers took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the second inning. Dennis Blackmon (1-2) led off the inning by launching a solo home run over the left field wall. It was Blackmon's first professional home run and his first home run of 2006. The solo home run tied the game at 3-3. Two batters later, Goss hit a double and then scored when John Lackaff (1-2) hit an RBI single to give Joliet a 4-3 lead.
Kansas City scored two more runs in the third inning to re-take the lead at 5-4. The JackHammers responded with two runs in the third inning to take a 6-5 lead. Stratton led off the inning for Joliet with a walk. He moved up to second base on an infield single by Will Henderson (1-2) and went to third when T-Bones third baseman Zach Norman fielded the infield single and threw the ball to the right of first base. Henderson moved up to second base and Stratton went to third on the play.
Chris Brown followed with a two-run single to plate both Stratton and Henderson and give Joliet a 6-5 lead.
The JackHammers were set to bat in the top of the fifth inning before the umpires cleared the field with thunderstorms in the area. The rain soon fell and caused a delay of an hour and a half before the game was suspended shortly after 10:15 p.m.
Loose Gravel: Wednesday's game was the first suspended game for the JackHammers in 2006.
The JackHammers return home to start a three-game series with the Calgary Vipers Thursday night. The action begins at 7:05 and the pre-game show starts at 6:50 on 1340 WJOL. Right-hander Derell McCall (2-2, 3.40) starts for Joliet. Scott Sarver (1-1, 3.38) starts for Calgary.
