Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Metairie, La. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (50-36) erupted for six runs in the eighth and then held off a late charge from the New Orleans Zephyrs (45-42) to win 10-9 before 11,778 at Zephyr Field Wednesday night.
Trailing 5-4 in the eighth, the RedHawks loaded the bases with none out against Dan Jennings (0-1). With Angel Sanchez batting, Evan Reed's first pitch got past catcher Clint Sammons to allow the tying run to score.
Two batters later, Landon Powell sent a single up the middle to put the RedHakws in front, 7-5. Pinch hitter Brandon Barnes followed with a beautiful squeeze bunt single to score another run, and Marwin Gonzalez finished off the rally with a two-run double to make it a 10-5 game.
New Orleans scored once in the eighth and three more times in the ninth to pull within one. The Zephyrs had the tying run at third with two outs, but Hector Ambriz got pinch hitter Chris Aguila to line out to right field to end the game.
The Zephyrs got on the board just three pitches into the bottom of the first. Kevin Mattison led off with a double, and on the next pitch, Gil Velazquez hit an RBI single up the middle.
The RedHawks took the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Gonzalez tied the game with an RBI double, and two batters later, Fernando Martinez put the RedHawks in front with an RBI single.
Gonzalez finished the game 3-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs.
The lead was short-lived, though. With none on and two outs in the bottom of the inning, Velazquez singled and Chris Coghlan followed with a two-run homer. Mike Cervenak stepped up next and followed suit with a solo shot to make it 4-2.
Jimmy Paredes pulled the RedHawks back within one in the fifth with his seventh homer of the season. New Orleans scored again in the sixth, but Powell went deep in the seventh close the gap to 5-4.
Adalberto Flores (5-1) earned the win after tossing a scoreless seventh.
The RedHawks and Zephyrs continue their series Friday at 7 p.m. Live coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on AM 1340 The Game, 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
