Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Des Moines, IA - Johnny Giavotella drove in four runs and finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as Omaha overpowered Iowa, 11-2, Wednesday night in the opener of a five-game set at Principal Park. The Storm Chasers improved to 55-32 with their sixth straight victory over the Cubs.
The visitors wasted no time jumping on Iowa starter Rodrigo Lopez for three runs in the first inning on run-scoring hits by Clint Robinson and Tony Abreu and a David Lough sacrifice fly. Giavtolla doubled in a pair of runs and scored on a Wil Myers fly ball in the second to extend the lead to 6-0.
Iowa got on the board in the third on a two-out RBI hit by Brett Jackson that ended an 18-inning scoreless inning stretch for Omaha starter Doug Davis. The veteran left-hander worked into and out of trouble for most of the night and earned the win for a fifth straight turn after yielding two runs on eights and four walks while striking out five over 6 2/3 frames.
The Chasers added on to their lead with two more runs in the fifth when Abreu doubled in Myers and then scored on an error following a Lough steal of second base. Lopez was removed after 4 1/3 innings and tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits while walking one and striking out one.
Giavotella blasted a solo shot over the wall in center field in the sixth and added a sacrifice fly during a two-run eighth inning against former Omaha hurler Mike MacDougal that finished the scoring. The Chasers received 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief from Francisley Bueno and Tommy Hottovy to close out their 21st win in 40 road games.
The series continues Thursday night with Omaha left-hander Ryan Verdugo taking the mound against Iowa southpaw Brooks Raley. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180, Zone Two, The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
