Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Edinson Volquez continued an outstanding stretch and Erasmo Ramirez chipped in two perfect innings as the RedHawks recorded their fifth shutout of the season with a 4-0 win over Memphis in the series finale Thursday night at AutoZone Park.
Volquez, the PCL Pitcher of the Week, has thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings and has tossed seven scoreless fames in each of his last two starts. He improved to 4-5, while Ramirez retired all six batters he faced on Thursday. Oklahoma pitching set down the last 16 Memphis hitters and the RedHawks improved to 7-1 so far on the 12-game trip.
Freddy Guzman drove in the first run on a third-inning ground out. Oklahoma rallied for three two-out runs in the sixth off starter and losing pitcher Travis Smith (2-2) with a single by Adam Hyzdu followed by an RBI double from Laynce Nix. Jason Hart followed with a two-run homer to complete the scoring, Hart's fourth homer in 13 games as a RedHawk.
The RedHawks are over .500 for the first time since April 16 by improving to 34-33. Memphis falls to 24-42.
Oklahoma will start right-hander Nick Masset Friday at Nashville in the series opener at 7 p.m. CDT. The Sounds will counter with right-hander Dennis Sarfate.
