Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Micah Owings did not allow a hit over his six scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut and Scott Hairston continued his assault on Portland pitching as the Tucson Sidewinders defeated the Beavers 5-1 before 6,092 Thursday night at PGE Park.
Owings (1-0), a second-year professional ranked among the top 10 prospects in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, struck out two but allowed five walks in his first appearance above Class AA.
With Stephen Drew and Carlos Quentin aboard in the fifth, Hairston belted a three-run homer, his third of the series and his sixth against Portland this season, to boost Tucson's lead to 4-0.
Hairston, the league leader in RBIs, was 4-for-4 with a walk and is batting .529 in eight games against the Beavers this season.
Brian Barden hit his fifth home run for the Sidewinders (42-26), who have won 11 of their last 12 games.
Ben Johnson's sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth helped the Beavers (33-34) avoid the shutout.
A one-out error by Portland third baseman Paul McAnulty led to an unearned run for Tucson in the third. Quentin reached on the play, and Hairston and Chris Young followed with singles to left to load the bases. Quentin scored from third on a groundout to the pitcher off the bat of Chris Carter.
The Beavers finally got their first hit with one out in the seventh when Jack Cust lined a single to center off Jeff Bajenaru, who came on for Owings to start the inning.
Despite logging his fifth quality outing in his last six starts, Tim Stauffer fell to 3-6 with the loss. He allowed four runs (3 earned) off eight hits in six innings.
Trailing 5-1 in the ninth, the Beavers loaded the bases with one out, but reliever Tony Pena struck out pinch-hitter David Matranga and Manny Alexander.
The Beavers, who have lost seven of eight to Tucson this season, open a four-game series against the Fresno Grizzlies at PGE Park Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Hall-of-fame pitcher Jim Palmer was at PGE Park as part of his work with "Strike Out High Cholesterol," a national health-education campaign. Palmer threw out the first pitch and signed autographs on the main concourse, with one lucky fan winning a Palmer-autographed Baltimore Orioles jersey ... Hairston's home run was the first allowed by Stauffer since April 28 ... the Beavers transferred pitcher Eddie Pena to Class A Fort Wayne on Thursday and added newly signed right-hander Steve Andrade to the roster ... Cust has reached base in his last 26 home games.
