Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Portland - Micah Owings worked six hitless and scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut to lead the Sidewinders to a 5-1 win over the Portland Beavers on Thursday night at PGE Park. Tucson returned to 16 games over the .500 mark at 42-26. They are four and a half games up on Las Vegas and eight up on Sacramento in the Pacific Southern division.

Owings was lifted after throwing 96 pitches in six innings. He walked five and struck out two to improve his record to 1-0 in the PCL and 7-2 overall for the season.

Tucson broke the seal with a run in the top of the third inning. Chris Carter's ground out scored Carlos Quentin who reached on an error by Beavers third baseman Paul McAnulty.

In the fifth, the Sidewinders picked up all the insurance they would need. Stephen Drew led off with a walk and Quentin was hit by his minor league leading 21st pitch of the year. Scott Hairston then launched his 18th home run of the year to give the Sidewinders a 4-0 lead.

The homer was Hairston's 18th of the year, tying him for the most in the PCL.

Portland finally got a hit in the seventh. With one out, former Sidewinder Jack Cust lined a solid single to center off Jeff Bajenaru, one of two hits that Bajenaru would allow in the inning.

Casey Daigle surrendered a solo home run to Ben Johnson for the Beavers only run of the game.

Tony Pena escaped a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the ninth with back to back strikeouts of David Matranga and Manny Alexander.

The Sidewinders will travel to Colorado Springs tomorrow to open a four game series with the Sky Sox. Left-hander Mike Bacsik (6-0 2.01) will start for Tucson against right-hander Sun-Woo Kim (2-2 4.83) for Colorado Springs. First pitch is at 6:05 Tucson time. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:00.
