RedHawks nip Redbirds in extras

HIGHLIGHTS: The Oklahoma RedHawks opened the 2008 season with a 4-3, extra-inning win over the Memphis Redbirds at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Ryan Roberts drove Jarrod Saltalamacchia home from second in the tenth to seal the win for Oklahoma. The Redbirds jumped to an early lead on RedHawks starter Eric Hurley, posting a run in the first on a single by Josh Phelps and a pair in the third on an Amaury Marti home run. Oklahoma battled back with a three runs in the fifth on Memphis starter Mike Parisi. Drew Meyer singled to start the inning and scored on a ground out by Kevin Mench, Nate Gold followed with a two-run single, driving in Jason Ellison and German Duran to tie the game at three. The bullpens dominated the game from the sixth inning on, with Oklahoma getting the better of Memphis to finish the game. The RedHawks tallied their four runs off ten hits with Kea Kometani (1-0) notching the victory following a perfect tenth inning. Kelvin Jimenez (0-1) took the loss for the Redbirds, which fell to Oklahoma to start the third consecutive season. Colby Rasmus had three hits for Memphis, while Joe Mather and Phelps had two hits apiece. Roberts finished with three hits for the RedHawks, who also got multi-hit games from Ellison, Gold, and Meyer.

Oklahoma and Memphis play the second game of this four-game set Friday evening at 7:05 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
