TONIGHT: The RedHawks and Sacramento River Cats (Oakland A's) continue their series with Game 2 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. OKC blanked Sacramento yesterday 1-0 to take a 2-0 series lead in the only matchup of the regular season between these inter-conference clubs. OKC leads the American South Division by 2.5 games over Albuquerque. Sacramento is fourth, 8.5 back of Fresno in the Pacific South. Lefty Michael Ballard gets the start for the RedHawks against righthander Clayton Mortensen.
FIRST-INNING RUN HOLDS UP: The RedHawks scored a single run in the first inning yesterday and made it stick in a 1-0 win over Sacramento. The River Cats have taken 1-0 losses in 2 of their last 3 games. Nelson Cruz, in the second game of his medical rehab assignment, singled in the run off of Lenny DiNardo, who tossed a complete game. It was the first complete game OKC has been involved in this year, for or against. Guillermo Moscoso turned in his third quality start and longest outing of the season, pitching 7 innings while allowing 4 hits. Tanner Scheppers earned his first Triple-A save, going the final 2. It was the second straight game a recently promoted pitcher has earned a save, as Alexi Ogando debuted in Triple-A with a save on Tuesday.
SHUTDOWN INNINGS: RedHawks pitching has tossed 14 straight scoreless innings dating to Sacramento's last runs in the fourth on Tuesday. That night, OKC retired the final 17 River Cats. The run of consecutively retired batters reached 25 until Dusty Napoleon walked in yesterday's third inning. Wednesday's shutout was OKC's fourth of the season, which matches Tacoma and Colorado Springs for the league lead.
PCL TEAM LEADERBOARD: The RedHawks lead the PCL lead in home runs (33) and triples (14), while second in on-base percentage (.354) and slugging (.447). The RedHawks have out-scored the opposition 185-132, owning the best run differential (+53) in the league. Fresno has the second-best run differential at +45.
PCL TEAM LEADERBOARD, PITCHING: OKC's team ERA (3.29) is second behind Tacoma's 3.24. The RedHawks have the second-most strikeouts (240) behind Sacramento's 256. OKC is tied with New Orleans for the fourth-fewest home runs allowed with 20. Reno and Tacoma have surrendered 19 homers, while Round Rock is best with 18.
SALTY'S STREAK ENDS: Jarrod Saltalamacchia had his 16-game end yesterday with an 0-for-3. Saltalamacchia's streak matches Jon Jay of Memphis for the second-longest in the league this season. Colorado Springs' Matt Miller leads the league with an active 20-game hitting streak. Saltalamacchia also had a 17-game on-base streak halted yesterday, the first time he hadn't reached base with OKC this season.
BULLPEN BASHERS: The RedHawks have scored more runs against opposing teams' bullpens than starting staffs this season. Of OKC's 185 runs, 95 have been against relievers, with 90 charged to starters. OKC has collected 145 hits in 106.1 innings against the league's collective relief corps, while amassing 171 hits in 184 innings vs. starters. The RedHawks have failed to score against an opponents' bullpen just 7 times in 31 games, going 1-6 in those contests.
ODDS AND ENDS: Esteban German is tops in the league with 30 runs scored and is tied with Portland's Luis Durango for the stolen base lead with 14...Hernan Iribarren leads the PCL with 5 sacrifice flies...The ex-River Cats on the RedHawks, Esteban German, Gregorio Petit, Wes Bankston and Nelson Cruz are a combined 16-for-30 with 1 homer and 7 RBIs in the first 2 games of this series...Bankston has reached base by hit or walk in all 4 games with the Hawks after being promoted from Frisco...Kevin Richardson caught yesterday's combined 5-hit shutout in his first game since switching assignments with Taylor Teagarden, who is slated to get regular playing time with Frisco.
