SALT LAKE CITY - Casey Daigle pitched out of a ninth-inning jam giving the Round Rock Express a 5-4 victory over the Salt Lake Bees Thursday night in Pacific Coast League action at Spring Mobile Park. The Express (15-19) win their first road series of the season, taking each of the series first three games against the Bees (15-18).
Daigle escaped with runners on first-and-second in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Chris Shelton provided the game-winning, two-run homer in fifth snapping a 3-3 tie. It was Shelton's team-leading sixth homer, and his second in as many games.
Express starter Wesley Wright (2-0) earned the win, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Sammy Gervacio induced two-straight outs when entering in the sixth with runners on second and third. Gervacio allowed his only run in the seventh, giving up two hits in 1.2 innings. Evan Englebrook pitched a perfect frame in the eighth before Daigle picked up the save, while allowing two hits.
Daniel Davidson (3-1) was tallied the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings. Davidson finished with four strikeouts and one walk. Francisco Rodriguez threw 2.1 innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout. Ryan Aldridge allowed one hit in the ninth with two strikeouts.
Scoring three runs in the fourth, the Express got the 3-2 lead, starting when Shelton led off the inning drawing a walk. After a single by Matt Kata, Jason Castro's RBI single drove in Shelton. A one-out sac fly by Yordany Ramirez scored Kata. Drew Meyer reached first safely after a squeeze bunt that scored Castro.
A homer by Shelton in the fifth capped the two-run inning plating Brian Bogusevic as well who reached on a one-out single.
Shelton (3-for-4), Meyer (3-for-4), Kata (2-for-4) and Castro (2-for-4) led the Express offense with multiple hits. Shelton has a hit in 25 of the team's 34 games, which is best on the team. Castro is riding a season-high six game hitting streak.
Round Rock and Salt Lake continue the four-game series Friday with a 7:35 p.m. CDT first pitch at Spring Mobile Park. The Express will send out righty Josh Banks (3-3, 2.93), opposed by Bees' righty Mark Albano (0-5, 7.82).
The Round Rock Express, owned and operated by Ryan-Sanders Baseball, LP, is the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros and a member of the Pacific Coast League.
