New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out, the New Orleans Zephyrs were cooking up a recipe for a comeback win.
But after a baserunning gaffe, the Z's rally was cut short, as the Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Zephyrs 6-5 on Thursday night before a crowd of 8,357 at Zephyr Field.
In the ninth, Ryan Klosterman led off with a ground out to Grizzlies pitcher Steve Eldefsen, and Donnie Murphy followed with a pinch-hit double.
With one out, Emilio Bonifacio laced a single to center field and advanced to second on an error by Eugenio Velez. Murphy scored from second on the error, but the Zephyrs would quickly find themselves down to just one out, as Bonifacio overran second on the play and was tagged out.
With two out, Grizzlies closer Geno Espineli shut the door with his third save of the year, retiring Danny Richar on a one-hopper back to the mound.
Zephyr starter Brian Lawrence (2-3) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned), while scattering eight hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings.
Fresno starter Eric Hacker improved to 6-1 on the year after allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings.
Bonifacio, Richar, Hector Luna, Jason Lane and Mike Lamb all turned in two-hit efforts, combining for three of the Zephyrs' four RBI.
The four-game tilt will conclude tomorrow evening from Zephyr Field as righty Jorge Sosa (2-1, 4.87) will toe the rubber for the Zephyrs against fellow righty Joe Martinez (3-0, 4.09).
