LH Michael Ballard vs. LH Wesley Wright
TONIGHT: Fresh off a split of the first series of the year with Albuquerque, the Oklahoma City RedHawks begin the back half of an 8-game homestand with the first of four against the Round Rock Express (Houston Astros). The RedHawks dropped yesterday's series finale 9-5. Lefthander Michael Ballard makes his seasonal debut for OKC tonight. Ballard began last season with the RedHawks, but spent most of the year at Double-A Frisco where he was 7-6 with a 3.71 ERA. Lefty Wesley Wright gets the starting assignment for Round Rock in the first of 16 games between the division rivals. OKC is tied with Albuquerque for second in the American South Division, one game back of New Orleans. Round Rock dropped 3 out of 4 at New Orleans to open the season and sits fourth, two games off the pace.
GERMAN CONTINUES TORRID START: OKC's Esteban German collected 2 doubles yesterday to run his season-long hitting streak to 4 games. German is batting .471 (8-for-17) with 1 RBI, 3 doubles and a triple. German is sixth in the league in batting average.
TRACKING TRACY: Chad Tracy is part of a large group tied for second in the PCL with 6 RBIs and 2 home runs. Tracy had a 2-homer game on Saturday against Albuquerque's Tim Corcoran.
STREAKERS: Esteban German and Chad Tracy have hit safely in each of the first four games. Matt Brown and Andy Jenkins have season-long, four-game on-base streaks.
STARTERS OFF THE HOOK: A RedHawks starter has yet to receive a decision in four games this season. Guillermo Moscoso left with a 3-3 score through four innings yesterday before Albuquerque broke it open with a four-run fifth. The first three games saw a tie or lead change in the seventh inning or later, the first two decided in the winning team's last at-bat. Through 4 games, OKC's starters have a combined ERA of 3.27 (22 IP/ 8 ER) with 3 walks and 14 strikeouts.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: OKC hit into a pair of double plays yesterday, bringing its total to 9 on the season. The RedHawks have turned just 1 in the field.
GENTRY RETURNS: RedHawks outfielder Craig Gentry singled as pinch hitter in yesterday's ninth inning, his first at bat since being hit in the helmet with a James McDonald pitch in the third inning of Thursday's opener.
BOGGS ON DL: The RedHawks placed OF Brandon Boggs on the 7-day DL Saturday with right shoulder tendinitis. Catcher Chris Gradoville was promoted from Double-A Frisco to keep the RedHawks at the 24-man roster limit. Gradoville made his Triple-A and season debut in yesterday's ninth inning, grounding out as a pinch hitter.
FIELD STAFF BACK: RedHawks skipper Bobby Jones is back for his 10th season in Oklahoma City, the fourth during his current stint. Jones, the winningest manager in OKC's Triple-A history, previously managed the RedHawks from 2002-05 and the 89ers in 1993-94. With 1,356 career managerial wins, Jones leads all minor league managers in Rangers franchise history. Pitching coach Terry Clark, coach Scott Coolbaugh and athletic trainer Jason Roberts all return for the second seasons in Oklahoma City. Strength coach Ric Mabie is in his fourth local season.
ON THE AIR: RedHawks broadcasts return to flagship KTOK AM 1000 and RedHawks Radio Network affiliates in 2010. KTOK will air all games starting at 6 pm CDT or later (except for May 3, 4, 6 and 7). Those four games, and all action starting prior to 6 pm CDT, will air on 1340 AM Fox Sports.
