Cubs Earn First Victory in 2010

The Iowa Cubs picked up their first win of the 2010 season, in a 6-2 victory over the Memphis Redbirds at Principal Park on Monday night.

The Cubs out-hit the Redbirds 14-4 in a team effort that saw five different players cross the plate and seven players record at least one hit in the win. Micah Hoffpauir was 3-for-5 and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning when he brought home Jim Adduci with a double.

Memphis took an early 1-0 lead when lead-off hitter Jon Jay doubled and was brought home on Daniel Descala's RBI groundout. Iowa tied the game at one in their half of the inning when first baseman Bryan LaHair hit an RBI single to score Darwin Barney. Barney was 2-for-5 and tied the game 2-2 in the seventh inning with an RBI groundout. Hoffpauir followed with a double to put the Cubs ahead and give the team its first lead of the night, 3-2.

The Iowa Cubs posted five hits in the eighth inning to solidify their lead. Bobby Scales led off with a double and scored on Chris Robinson's single. Matt Camp plated Robinson for the 5-2 lead. Adduci brought in Camp for the sixth and final run of the game. It was Ryne Sandberg's first win as the Triple-A skipper.

Mitch Atkins (1-1) picked up the win for Iowa, throwing four innings in relief of starter Mike Parisi. Atkins allowed a triple to the first batter he faced but retired the next 12 Redbirds in order. Josh Kinney (0-1) took the loss for Memphis, allowing two runs on three hits.

The Cubs and Redbirds play tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. at Principal Park.
