TODAY'S OPPONENT:
The Iowa Cubs are the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Last year, Iowa tied Nashville for first in the American North Division. They lost the division title to Nashville by tie-breaker.
VS. IOWA:
The Cubs took three of four from the RedHawks in their last series May 25-28 at Principal Park. The Cubs lead the season series 5-3. In the first series of the season May 17-20 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, the RedHawks and Cubs split a four-game series.
TODAY'S GAME:
This is game 80 of the season. It's the final game of a 3-game series and the 11th of 15 meetings between Oklahoma and Iowa this season. The RedHawks are on a 7-game road trip.
LAST GAME:
The RedHawks won the second game of series with a 10-5 victory over Cubs last night. After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, the RedHawks scored 10 unanswered runs to build a 10-2 after the top of the seventh inning. For the second day in a row, every RedHawk in the starting lineup collected at least one hit as they totalled 14 for the game. After allowing a 2-run homer to Buck Coats in the second inning, RedHawk starter Mike Wood settled down to get his seventh win of the season, allowing three run on seven hits in seven innings of work.
PITCHING MATCHUP:
John Rheinecker wil make his sixth start of the season for the RedHawks. Rheinecker earned his first win this season Saturday against Omaha, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 7.0 innings. Rheinecker made his first rehab start of season against Cubs a Principal Park May 26, throwing five scoreless innings. Sean Gallagher goes to the hill for the Cubs.
ROAD BETTER IN JUNE FOR STARTERS:
RedHawk starters are 5-4 with a 4.21 ERA and five quality starts in 10 June road games. This after going 4-9 with a 7.83 ERA in 16 starts on the road in May. For the season, the RedHawks have an ERA of 5.96 on the road.
INHERITING ROADRUNNERS:
The RedHawks' bullpen has allowed only one of 15 inherited runners to score in road games this month. The bullpen has 18 strikeouts in 19.1 innings in those 10 games.
BOTTS STREAKING: Jason Botts
has an 11-game hitting streak coming into tonight after going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored last night. In June, Botts is hitting .367 with three homers and 17 RBIs.
NELSON CRUZ:
Cruz has reached base in 19 of 21 games as a RedHawk after going 2-for-5 with a 2-run homer and two runs scored last night. Since joining the RedHawks, Cruz is hitting .366 (26-71) with eight home runs and 19 RBIs.
STEWART BEHIND THE PLATE:
The RedHawks are 9-1 in games Chris Stewart starts at catcher. Stewart is hitting .425 (17-40) with a homer and 11 RBIs in 11 games as a RedHawk. He brings a 6-game hitting streak into tonight after going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs last night. He has a hit in 10 of the 11 games he has played.
HAWKS AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS:
Wood leads the PCL with a 2.44 ERA. Botts is tied for the lead with 29 doubles, he's second with a .425 on-base percentage and tied for third with 38 extra-base hits Freddy Guzman is 1st with 23 stolen bases.
ALL-STAR SELECTION:
Wood (7-1, 2.44) was selected as a pitcher to represent Oklahoma and the PCL in the All-Star Game.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
The RedHawks are 7-4 on Fridays this season and 7-12 in the finale of a series this season...the Hawks improved to 12-15 against lefties after defeating Les Walrond last night...RedHawk starters have made it through the seventh inning three consecutive games, all RedHawk wins...The RedHawks are in second place in the American South for the first time since May 22...Hawk hitters have drawn the second most walks in the PCL this season with 304...Through two games of this series, the RedHawks have outscored the Cubs 17-2 in innings one through four.
