Today's Game-- The RedHawks finish what's been a tough eight-game road trip when they face the Storm Chaseres at 11:05 a.m. Paul Clemens will start on three days' rest and hopes to help the RedHawks avoid a sweep at Werner Park.
Yesterday-- For the second straight day, the Storm Chasers won on a walk-off home run to hand the RedHawks a heartbreaking 10-7 defeat. With two on and two out in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth, Cody Clark sent a 2-1 pitch from Juan Abreu (0-2) down the right field line that snuck over the fence near the corner to give the Storm Chasers their 13th straight win at home. Once again, the RedHawks erased a two-run deficit in the ninth, with Justin Ruggiano providing another clutch hit. With one on and one out, Ruggiano went opposite way out to right field for his fourth home run of the season, tying the game, 7-7. The early innings were back-and-forth, picking up how they left off Saturday night. The lead changed hands four times in the three innings. Omaha led 7-4 in the fifth before the RedHawks started to rally once again. Scott Moore hit his fourth home run, and Brett Wallace went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Paul Clemens will pitch on just three days' rest and looks to bounce back after a rough outing Thursday in Albuquerque...Clemens was pulled during the third inning after 11 of the 15 batters he faced reached base...Prior to last start, Clemens had consistently pitched well...He had a 2.05 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP and opponents were hitting .228...Today he'll make his sixth start overall and third since a brief stay on the DL with a minor back strain he incurred in Memphis on April 15....Clemens is in his first full season with the Astros after being acquired as part of a four-player package from Atlanta in exchange for Michael Bourn during last year's trade deadline...Everett Teaford will make his second start for the Storm Chasers after recently being optioned from Kansas City...In his first game back in Triple-A, the lefty tossed 5.2 scoreless innings in Nashville last Wednesday...In three appearances (one start) with Kansas City, Teaford allowed seven runs and 11 hits over 11 innings with seven walks and four strikeouts...Although Teaford has primarily been a reliever the last couple of seasons, 104 of his 171 professional appearances have been starts.
Rough Road-- After last night's loss, the RedHawks are 1-6 on the current road trip and have been outscored 52-33. As a team, they're hitting .260 and have team ERA of 7.36.
In It Till The End-- In three of their last five games, the RedHawks have erased a ninth-inning deficit and have scored at least once in the ninth all five times. Twice they even took the lead after trailing heading into the inning.
Hard to Beat-- Dating back to last season, Omaha has now won nine straight games over the RedHawks.
Hessman Heating Up-- Mike Hessman is hitting .368 (7-for-19) over his last seven games. He's had a multi-hit game in three of his last six starts, and is coming off back-to-back multi-hit games for the first time since he had two hits in each of his first three games of the season.
M&M Men-- Scott Moore and Fernando Martinez have both stood out within the RedHawks potent offense. Moore leads the PCL with 14 doubles, ranks second in extra-base hits (19), fourth in on-base percentage (.467), fourth in slugging percentage (.674), and fourth in RBIs (25). Martinez leads the RedHawks with five homers and is right behind Moore with 24 RBIs. Combined they are hitting .338 with nine homers and 49 RBIs. Last week, Moore was named the Astros Triple-A Offensive Player of the Month, and Martinez was named the Triple-A Defensive Player of the Month.
Notable Streaks-- Just Ruggiano holds the longest current hit streak on the club at nine straight (.394, 13x33). Fernando Martinez has hit safely in 10 of his last 12, and Scott Moore currently has a four-game hit streak.
You Better Think Twice-- The RedHawks have caught 17 of 35 attempted base stealers for a 48.6% caught stealing rate, best in the PCL. Landon Powell is 7-for-11, and Carlos Corporan is 10-for-24.
Rough Starts-- After posting a 2.14 ERA through the first 16 games of the season, the starting rotation has faltered a bit lately. Over the last 15 games, the starting rotation has a 6.61 ERA (60 ER/81.2 IP) and has allowed 103 hits in 75.2 innings. Five of those starts have lasted less than five innings.
Close Calls-- The Red Hawks have seven one-run losses this season, the second-most in the PCL behind Iowa (9). They're also tied with Sacramento for the most losses in extra innings with three.
Omaha Ties-- Three players on the current RedHawks roster are no strangers to Omaha. Dallas Keuchel (Arkansas, 2009), Landon Powell (South Carolina, 2002-2004), and Brett Wallace (Arizona State, 2007) each played in the College World Series.
Against the Storm Chasers-- The RedHawks went 6-10 against Omaha last season, including a 4-4 mark at Werner Park...The RedHawks batted just .217 while the Storm Chasers hit .302...Clint Robinson put up a .323/4/14 line over the 16 contests...These two teams next meet June 23-26 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
