Papillion, Neb. - David Lough hit a grand slam to highlight a six-run third inning for the Omaha Storm Chasers (22-10) as they swept the Oklahoma City RedHawks (17-15) 8-4 before 4,101 at Werner Park Monday afternoon. The win was the Storm Chasers' 14th straight at home.
Trailing 1-0 following a Mike Hessman home run, the Storm Chasers busted out for six runs in the third inning. Four straight hits to start the inning plated two runs and gave Omaha its first lead.
After a walk to load the bases, Lough hit a grand slam to right-center field to extend his hitting streak to 17 games and put the Storm Chasers up 6-1.
Omaha kept it going in the fourth. Four of the first five who stepped to the plate collected hits to extend the lead to 8-1.
Johnny Giavotella's one-out RBI double knocked RedHawks starting pitcher Paul Clemens out of the ballgame. Pitching on three days' rest, Clemens (2-3) had his second straight rough outing, allowing eight runs and 10 hits in 3.1 innings.
Omaha's bottom third of the order deserves a lot of credit for building the Storm Chasers' lead. Kurt Mertins, Terry Evans, and Cody Clark combined to go 7-for-11 with two RBIs. The three combined to score five runs as well.
The RedHawks chipped away at the lead, getting an RBI double by Fernando Martinez in the sixth, and a two-run double by Justin Ruggiano to pull within 8-4 in the seventh.
Ruggiano finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, extending his current hitting streak to 10 games.
Omaha pitcher Everett Teaford (1-0) earned his first win since being recently optioned from Kansas City, allowing just two runs over 5.1 innings. The lefty surrendered four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
After dropping seven of eight on the road trip, the RedHawks return to begin an eight-game home stand Tuesday night against the Las Vegas 51s at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the RedHawks box office, or by calling (405) 218-1000. Tickets are also available at okcredhawks.com and ticketmaster.com.
Live coverage of the game starts at 6:35 p.m on 1340 AM The Game, 1340thegame.com, and through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
