Sacramento's Donaldson And Godfrey Top Players For The Week
Published on May 7, 2012 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Pacific Coast League announced today that Josh Donaldson and Graham Godfrey of the Sacramento River Cats have been named the PCL Player and Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 30th to May 6th.
Donaldson paced the league with an unmatched .579 batting average, .652 on-base percentage, and .947 slugging percentage as he came to the plate 23 times in 6 games. His fiery performance included two home runs and nine RBIs, while also adding three walks and seven runs scored as he split time between third base and catcher.
Donaldson was a first-round draft pick out of Auburn by the Chicago Cubs in 2007. He was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2008 and notched his first Major League hit on May 1st, 2010 when he smashed a two-run home run off of Dana Eveland of the Toronto Blue Jays. Donaldson hit 35 home runs between 2010 and 2011 with Sacramento before opening the 2012 season with Oakland as their starting third baseman.
Godfrey earns his honors after notching wins in both of his starts last week, pitching thirteen innings and allowing just one unearned run for a 0.00 ERA. After traveling to hitter-friendly Colorado Springs and then facing Tucson at home, the right-hander struck out nine batters total while walking just one as he stayed perfect on the week.
Godfrey, from Houston, Texas, was drafted by Toronto in the 34th round in 2006 out of the College of Charleston. After being traded to Oakland in a deal for Marco Scutaro, Godfrey moved strongly through the system. In 2011 he made 18 starts for Sacramento, going 14-3 with a 2.68 ERA while notching 89 strikeouts, and earning his MLB debut on June 11th. Godfrey also made Oakland's 2012 Opening Day roster, and since returning to the River Cats he has gone 3-0 and has allowed just one earned run.
