Today's Game: The RedHawks and New Orleans Zephyrs conclude their current four-game series, as well as their season series, at 7:05 p.m. at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks are aiming to finish their seven-game homestand with a winning record.
Last Game: New Orleans scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to secure a 4-3 come-from-behind win against the RedHawks Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks held a 3-2 advantage through seven innings. Josh Rodriguez led off the eighth with a single for New Orleans, then scored on a triple by Jordany Valdespin to knot the game. Mark Canha followed with a sac fly to bring home Valdespin and put the Zephyrs in front. The RedHawks put the tying run in scoring position with one out in the ninth before Arquimedes Caminero closed things out for his second save. The RedHawks scored first when Marc Krauss hit a two-run homer into the upper deck of the right field stands in the first. The Zephyrs answered with a two-run homer to left field by Matt Angle to tie the game in the top of the third. The RedHawks regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a RBI single by Domingo Santana. Although the RedHawks notched three runs and seven hits through the first three innings, they were held to no runs and four hits the rest of the way. Jorge De Leon (2-1) was charged with the loss and a blown save, allowing two runs on three hits over the final three innings.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Asher Wojciechowski makes his sixth start in a season marred by injuries...Wojciechowski had his longest outing of the season July 4 against Iowa in Bricktown, pitching five innings. He allowed three runs and four hits, walked two and struck out three in a no decision...He missed the beginning of the season after suffering a strained lat muscle Feb. 1 while throwing a bullpen session. Shortly after his season debut in New Orleans on May 21, Wojciechowski sustained a right forearm flexor strain, prompting him to be sidelined again. He returned to action June 18 in Reno...Since returning from the flexor strain, Wojciechowski has struggled a bit, allowing 13 runs (12 earned) and 23 hits over 16.1 IP...Just like last season, Wojciechowski has done a tremendous job with runners in scoring position, limiting opponents to a .167 average (5x30)...In 2013 he combined to go 11-8 with a 3.32 ERA and 131 strikeouts between Double-A Corpus Christi and the RedHawks. He led all Astros minor leaguers with a .223 opponent batting average and 160.0 IP...He spent the majority of the season with the RedHawks, going 9-7 with a 3.56 ERA over 22 games. He paced the club with 21 starts, 134.0 IP, nine wins and 104 strikeouts...He ranked second in the PCL in opponent average (.229), third in WHIP (1.19) and seventh in ERA (3.56)...Against New Orleans in his first start of the season, Wojciechowski held the Zephyrs to one run and four hits over four innings and struck out a season-high five batters. In three career starts he is 0-1, but with a 2.50 ERA.
Against the Zephyrs: 2014: 9-6 2013: 8-8 All-time: 141-127 In OKC: 76-59
The Zephyrs have won three of the last four meetings. In two of those games, the RedHawks led after seven innings...With last Tuesday's victory, the RedHawks clinched a win in the season series for the first time since 2010...In the seven games played in OKC, the Zephyrs have scored 45 runs. In the eight games the teams played in New Orleans, the Zephyrs scored just 19 runs...Gregorio Petit leads the RedHawks with 18 hits against New Orleans and is batting .367. He also has seven RBI and has scored six runs. Max Stassi has 16 hits and 13 RBI, with two home runs over 13 games...OKC played eight straight games against New Orleans in early April, winning six times. The series sweep by the RedHawks April 7-10 was their first at Zephyr Field since July 20-23, 2009...The RedHawks and Zephyrs split their previous two season series, going 8-8 against each other in 2013 and 2012.
Close Calls: Including last night, five of the six games during the current homestand have been decided by one run. With last night's loss, the RedHawks fell to 13-14 in one-run games this season. Seven of the first nine games this month have been decided by one or two runs, with the RedHawks going 3-4 in those contests.
Highs and Lows: After taking three of four during a series in Reno June 17-20, the RedHawks' record stood at a season-best eight games above .500 (42-34). Since then they've gone 6-12, and in four of those losses they've had a lead in the seventh inning or later. A loss tonight would put them at just one game above .500 for the first time since they were 16-15 after a loss on May 4 in Omaha.
Tucker Up: Preston Tucker is 7-for-15 during his current four-game hitting streak, with three multi-hit performances.
Men of Steal: Ronny Torreyes stole his third base of the season last night, giving the RedHawks a league-best 13 steals in July. They have 67 stolen bases this season to rank sixth in the PCL, and Austin Wates is third in the league with 22 swipes.
Dinger Details: Marc Krauss' first-inning homer last night was his fourth over the past 16 games. He homered just once in his first 16 games with OKC. Krauss is responsible for two of the team's three homers this month, which rank last in the league...The RedHawks have tied a season high by allowing a home run in four straight games (previously April 18-21). The pitching staff has given up seven homers over those four games and nine homers over the six games of the current homestand. Even with the recent hiccup, their 68 homers allowed this season are still second-fewest in the league (Nashville - 63).
Post-Third World: The RedHawks have been held scoreless after the third inning in five of the past seven games. During the current series, the RedHawks have not scored against the Zephyrs after the third inning. They've been held to nine hits (one extra-base hit) over those 17 innings and have not had a runner reach third base.
Trade Winds: Earlier today, the Astros traded RedHawks reliever Bobby Doran to the Chicago White Sox for a player to be named later. Doran is the fifth RedHawk to be traded this season and the second reliever to be traded in a week (Andrew Robinson).
First is Not the Best: In each of the six games of the current homestand, the team that scored first has lost.
