Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds (16-5) split a doubleheader with the Round Rock Express (Rangers) Thursday night at AutoZone Park, losing game one 6-1 before taking the nightcap, 2-1.
Oscar Mercado was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored on the day, and Yairo Munoz also had a hit in both games for the Redbirds. Patrick Wisdom drove in both Memphis runs in game two.
Overall, three Memphis relief pitchers combined to allow just one run in 7.1 innings of work, and the trio struck out nine.
Game 1: Round Rock 6, Memphis 1
Round Rock took advantage of two Memphis errors and limited the Redbirds to four hits in a 6-1 win in game one. Andy Ibanez was 4-for-4 with three RBI for the Express. Daniel Poncedeleon allowed six runs, two earned, in 5.2 innings, and he struck out five.
Mercado was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run in the opener.
Game 2: Memphis 2, Round Rock 1
Wisdom drove in a pair of runs, and Kevin Herget and Preston Guilmet combined for 6.0 innings of work out of the bullpen, giving up one run on two hits, to propel a 2-1 Redbirds victory.
Sam Tuivailala made an injury rehabilitation start for Memphis, and he gave up one hit with a strikeout in the first inning. Ten of his 15 pitches on the night went for strikes.
Round Rock scored a run off Herget in the second, but the Redbirds answered right back in the home-half and added the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fourth, when Wisdom blasted a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Herget ended up working 4.0 innings and struck out four.
Guilmet picked up his fifth save of the year with 2.0 frames of work.
The Redbirds continue their nine-game homestand tomorrow night at 7:05 with game three of a five-game series with Round Rock. After Sunday's series finale, Memphis does battle with Oklahoma City Monday-next Thursday.
