Sky Sox Top Storm Chasers in 13-12 Marathon

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox began their longest homestand of the season with a three-hour and forty-four minute, 13-12 victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers Wednesday night at Security Service Field. Kyle Wren highlighted the night offensively with his masterful 4-for-5 night at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI. Right-hander Corbin Burnes, despite getting out of a decision, had his first rough start of his Triple-A career, finishing after a season-low 3.1 innings while allowing eight runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Colorado Springs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Following an error by Omaha third baseman Hunter Dozier to allow Sky Sox leadoff man Nate Orf on first, Brett Phillips sent his fourth double to left field while Ji-Man Choi supported the cause and brought Phillips in on his two-out single.

After Omaha minimized the lead to one in the top of the second thanks to Logan Moon's sacrifice fly ball to score Tyler Collins (walk), the Sky Sox roared back with four runs fours hits to extend the lead to 6-1.

Omaha answered back again in the third with two more runs, but the Sky Sox mimicked the previous offensive half with another four runs to take a commanding 10-3 lead through three.

However, in the fourth, Omaha stormed back with seven runs on four singles, two walks, and was capped off by Frank Schwindel's game-tying, three-run home run to left field, making it a 10-10 draw through four innings.

After each side put up a run in the fifth inning (11-11), the Sky Sox would be the team to break through in the sixth with two runs in the bottom half. Andres Blanco led off the inning with his sixth double, while a passed ball advanced him to third and a fielder's choice groundball hit by Tyler Saladino was able to plate the go-ahead run. Saladino would advance on a balk and proceed to steal third base before Wren knocked in Saladino in on his fourth hit of the night to make it a two-run advantage.

The Storm Chasers would come back to within one run after back-to-back doubles by Ramon Torres and Dozier to mark the 10th and 11th extra-base hits of the night.

Erik Davis (1-3) would pick up his first win of the season after 1.2 innings pitched while allowing a run on three hits. Mike Zagurski tossed two-thirds of an inning and recorded his eighth hold while Jorge Lopez notched his third save of the year.

The Sky Sox continue the five-game series against Omaha tomorrow with game two scheduled for 6:40 p.m. at Security Service Field. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for another $3 Thirsty Thursday presented by Coors featuring $3 parking, $3 craft beers and $3 upper reserve tickets.

NOTES:

Rough Start: Righty starter and Brewers number two-rated prospect Corbin Burnes had his first rough start of season. After taking a 10-3 lead into the fourth inning, Omaha scored seven runs. Burnes exited after 3.1 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 4 BB, 2 K. It was the most amount of hits, runs and walks allowed by Burnes in the lowest amount of innings tossed in a start by him this season.

Runs on Runs: Last night marked the 100th time in Colorado Springs and 128th overall with the Sky Sox where each team scored at least 10 runs in the contest. It was the fourth time against Omaha in the Sky Sox modern history where each side scored 10 runs or more. In that last game, which was on May 14th, 2011, Omaha beat the Sky Sox 16 to 11 (T-3:34) and Lorenzo Cain hit for the cycle in that game for the Storm Chasers.

All for hits, hits for all: Game one of the series against Omaha marked the first time since July 26, 2017, against Tacoma where every Sky Sox batter in the lineup recorded a hit. It is the seventh time in Sky Sox modern history where they met the feat.

Four hits: Kyle Wren marked just the second Sky Sox player this season to collect four hits in a game. The first in 2018 was Keon Broxton on April 5 in game one of the Opening Day doubleheader also against Omaha.

Double Up: Wednesday night's double-steal by Tyler Saladino (home) and Kyle Wren (second) marked the first since July 27, 2017, versus Tacoma.

Longest and Most: Last night's game one with Omaha broke multiple feats in 2018 including: Most runs in game for Sky Sox (13), Most runs for opponent against Sky Sox (12), most hits in a game for Sky Sox (15), most hits in a game for opponent against Sky Sox (17), and longest game of 2018 (3:44).

Déjà vu: In back-to-back games, the Sky Sox have given up seven-run frames. The first came on April 23 in the final game against Round Rock in the eighth inning. Wednesday night, the Storm Chasers tallied seven runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 10 apiece. The last time an opponent tallied seven runs against the Sky Sox took place on July 30, 2017, at Cashman Field when Las Vegas scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning in that game. The last game at Security Service Field with a team to score at least seven runs or more in an inning came also last season on July 24 when Reno put up eight runs in the first inning.

Wren's Return: Fresh off of the disabled list, outfielder Kyle Wren came in hot with a three-hit night. Wren is now 17th all-time on Colorado Springs' hits list, surpassing Nelson Liriano, with 307 hits. He is one base hit away from tying Eric Young Jr. for 7th place on the all-time list in singles (241).

Getting Streaky: Mauricio Dubon extended his hit streak to 14 games Wednesday evening. Dubon has gone 19-for-58 over 14 games with 10 runs, two home runs, eight RBI, and two stolen bases. His longest recorded streak in 2017 with the Sky Sox was seven games. Phillips kept his streak alive after his RBI double in the first inning Wednesday evening to make it a seven-game span. Last season, his high streak was 11 games.

Orf hits 250: Leadoff man Nate Orf marked his 250th career Sky Sox regular-season hit Wednesday night. Orf is 35 hits shy of breaking into the Top 25 on Sky Sox All-Time.

Thursday's Expectation: In the second game of the five-game series, right-hander Freddy Peralta (4-0) gets the ball for the Sky Sox while righty Heath Fillmyer (1-1) is set to oppose him on the bump for the Storm Chasers.
