
Redbirds Score Seven in Extras for 11-4 Win

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Memphis Redbirds defeated the division-rival Omaha Storm Chasers today 11-4 in 12 innings in the final game of a rain-shortened series. The win leaves the Redbirds tied with the Storm Chasers for first-place in the PCL American Northern Division after taking two of three in Omaha.
Memphis leads the PCL with six extra-inning affairs (including a suspended game), and was 0-4 in those tilts entering today.
The Redbirds offense came to life in the top of the 12th inning, scoring seven runs on five hits, including four doubles. The go-ahead run was scored by Ryan Jackson on a wild pitch from Omaha reliever Dan Wheeler with the bases loaded, before the Redbirds' had a hit in the inning. Run-scoring doubles followed by J.R. Towles, Adron Chambers, Oscar Taveras, and Jackson to close the scoring at 11-4 in Memphis' favor.
Redbirds' bats woke up with Jackson pacing the offense, scoring twice and driving in two runs on three hits and a walk. Taveras added a 4-for-7 day while Chambers went for three RBIs.
Justin Christian hit his first triple of the season and Greg Garcia had two key hits and scored twice. Redbirds second baseman Kolten Wong hit his first career Triple-A home run and his fourth double of the season.
Omaha opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning against Redbirds' starter Tyler Lyons, who had a 35-pitch frame. Xavier Nady doubled in Johnny Giavotella to put Omaha up 1-0. Lyons would give up two hits and two walks in the inning, but escape with just the one run.
Memphis answered in the top of the 2nd with Brock Peterson's double starting the inning. Greg Garcia's RBI-single plated Peterson to tie the score, 1-1. Peterson finished 4-for-6 with a walk and two doubles. Wong's 5th-inning homer put the Redbirds up 2-1.
Memphis would threaten again in the 7th, with Christian's lead-off triple against Omaha reliever Everett Teaford. Christian was thrown out at home on Wong's sacrifice fly attempt. Storm Chaser starting pitcher Ryan Verdugo finished his outing with two runs (both earned) on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 6 innings pitched.
Omaha came back to even the scoring at 2-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning. A pair of infield hits ended Lyons' day, who gave up two runs (both earned) on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Barrett Browning finished the frame, retiring both batters he faced.
The Redbirds took the lead back in the top of the 8th inning. Chambers' left-field single scored two, making the score 4-2 in favor of Memphis.
The bottom of the 8th inning saw the Storm Chasers get those two runs back, as Max Ramirez hit a two-run homer off Redbird reliever Eduardo Sanchez to tie the score at 4-4. Sanchez gave up two runs (both earned) on a hit with a walk and a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning pitched.
Jorge Rondon came on in relief to get the last out of the 8th inning and stayed in for the bottom of the 9th. He left the bases loaded in the 9th inning, working around a hit, an error, and an intentional walk. Rondon gave up no runs in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
To start the top of the 12th inning, Omaha reliever Donnie Joseph issued back-to-back walks and hit a batter to load the bases prior to Wheeler coming in and delivering the go-ahead wild pitch. Joseph would take the loss (1-1), giving up three runs (all earned) on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts in 2/3 of an inning pitched.
Sam Freeman earned the win (3-0) and pitched scoreless 10th and 11th innings, allowing no hits, walking one and striking out three. Victor Marte worked around a walk and struck out two in the bottom of the 12th inning to close out the contest.
The Redbirds return to Memphis on Tuesday to open an eight-game homestand against the Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A Athletics) and Fresno Grizzlies (Triple-A Giants). Left-hander Nick Additon (1-1, 4.50 ERA) takes the hill for the Redbirds against lefty Andrew Werner (2-4, 9.46 ERA) for the River Cats in tomorrow's 7:02 p.m. series-opener.
