Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (16-13) lost the series finale with the Memphis Redbirds (16-13) by a margin of 11-4 in 12 innings as the division rival plated seven runs in the 12th, the most runs allowed in any frame this season for the Chasers, to fall back in to a tie for first place in the division with the St. Louis affiliate.
The Storm Chasers entered the game with the fewest hits allowed in the Pacific Coast League but the Redbirds feasted for 20 hits and 11 runs, the most hits allowed in a game all season for Omaha as well as only the third time in 29 games this year where they have allowed double-digit runs. Memphis scored the seven runs on four hits, two walks and a hit by pitch with eleven total men stepping to the plate in the final frame. Omaha had only allowed seven total hits in the first two games of the series.
Storm Chasers first baseman Max Ramirez belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning that ended up forcing the extra frames, his fourth homer of the season and the lone long bomb for Omaha in the series with Memphis. The Chasers failed to convert on a golden opportunity in the ninth with the bases loaded and only one out, but designated hitter Xavier Nady struck out and Redbirds leftfielder Justin Christian tracked down a would-be walk-off hit for Max Ramirez with a vest pocket catch to end the threat.
The two starting left-handers for both teams put together quality starts, with Omaha starter Ryan Verdugo going 6.1 innings allowing just two runs. Verdugo gave up his first run on a single by Memphis shortstop Greg Garcia in the second inning, which was the first earned run given up by a Storm Chasers starting pitcher in 18.0 innings in the month of May. It was the fifth consecutive start by an Omaha left-hander that did not allow more than two runs, and the 12th start out of the last 13 where a lefty starter accomplished that feat.
The Storm Chasers will now set out on an eight-game roadtrip, with the first stop featuring a 2012 Pacific Coast League Championship rematch series with the Reno Aces. Right hander Nate Adcock (2-2, 6.14) will get the start for the series opener, and will face off with Aces righty Zeke Spruill (1-0, 0.00) with first pitch scheduled for 8:35 p.m. CDT. Coverage of the game on 1180 The Zone 2 and www.omahastormchasers.com will begin at 8:15 p.m.
