MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis used an eighth inning rally to beat Oklahoma City 5-3 Friday night at AutoZone Park.
The Redbirds used four hits to scratch out three runs in the eighth to top the RedHawks. Mark Shorey's two-out, RBI-single put the âBirds in front before Brian Barden scored on a wild pitch to make the lead two runs. Matt Pagnozzi's RBI-single capped the rally. Pagnozzi finished the night with two hits along with Jon Jay and Jarrett Hoffpauir to pace the Redbirds 12-hit attack. Jared Bolden led Oklahoma City with two hits and a run scored.
Fernando Salas picked up the win in relief with one scoreless inning of work. Pete Parise allowed a run in the ninth but notched his seventh save for the âBirds. RedHawks starter Kris Benson was pinned with the loss giving up five runs on 12 hits in a complete-game effort. Former Ole Miss standout Lance Lynn made his Triple-A debut tossing 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.
With Nashville's 4-3 loss at New Orleans, Memphis extended their lead in the PCL's American North division to 1.5 games. The Redbirds can clinch their first division title since 2000 with a doubleheader sweep tomorrow and another Sounds loss at New Orleans.
The Redbirds and RedHawks will play two scheduled seven inning games tomorrow night with the first game slated for 6:05 p.m. Brian Gordon gets the ball for the Hawks against Memphis right-hander P.J. Walters in game one. Chris Cooper will toe the rubber for Oklahoma City in the night cap and oppose the âBirds Adam Ottavino.
