Beavers Come Back and Down Sky Sox, 6-5

September 4, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Portland Beavers scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 6-5 on Thursday evening at Security Service Field in front of 4,283 fans.

The Sky Sox made a dramatic comeback of their own in the eighth as they scored four runs in the frame. Trailing 4-1 coming into the inning, the Sox knocked out four hits and took advantage of two walks as they took a 5-4 lead. The go ahead run was driven in by Sal Fasano who singled in Matt Murton.

Unfortunately for the Sox, the lead would not last. Ryan Speier (2-2) came in to close out the gave in relief of Alan Johnson but on the first pitch, Danny Putnam hit a solo homer to right to tie the game at five all. After striking out pinch-hitter Jason Hagerty, Speier surrendered a double to Brett Dowdy and an RBI triple to Jason Codiroli to put the Beavers up for good.

Eulogio De La Cruz pitched a perfect ninth to notch his eighth save of the season and make a winner of reliever Edwin Moreno (3-3) who had surrendered the lead in the eighth.

The Sky Sox wrapped up their regular season home schedule tonight and will travel to Tacoma for a four-game series to end the regular season. The final series of the season holds a lot of dramatics for the Sky Sox as they will be in a showdown with second place Tacoma to decide the Pacific North Division. All the Sky Sox have to do to ensure their place in the playoffs is win two out of the four games. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM Pacific Time with LH Greg Smith (1-1, 5.96) taking the mound for the Sox versus LH Chris Seddon (8-8, 4.55).
