Reno Aces News Release
RENO, Nev.- Cesar Valdez and four Aces relievers combined to defeat the Fresno Grizzlies 2-1 in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel Friday night in front of 8,853 fans at Aces Ballpark.
Reno plated two runs in the home half of the second, which would prove to be the difference in the game. Three-straight one-out singles by Luke Carlin, Agustin Murillo and Taylor Harbin put Reno on the board. Abraham Nunez grounded into a potential inning-ending double play, but Grizzlies shortstop Jake Wald bobbled the ball, allowing Nunez to reach and Murillo to score what would turn out to be the game-winning run.
Cesar Valdez (7-6) started for the Aces, hurling five innings of one-run ball before being lifted for a pinch hitter. Reno's bullpen sealed the win for Valdez, as four relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief, striking out a combined three batters and walking only one. Scott Maine closed out the game with a perfect ninth, earning his second save in three days.
Fresno starter Ramon Ortiz (5-6) took the hard-luck loss for the Grizzlies, throwing a six-hit complete game.
Despite pulling out the victory, Reno was held to just six hits, with Carlin and Harbin chipping in multi-hit performances, as they each went 2-for-3.
The victory is the Aces' fourth-straight, and sends Reno to a new high-water mark on the season with a 76-64 record. The same two teams square off again Saturday, when Reno sends RHP Seth Etherton (10-8, 5.25 ERA) to the mound against a to-be-determined Grizzlies starter.
Saturday's game will feature a Collector's Baseball giveaway, with 2,500 fans walking away with a souvenir baseball, presented by KRNV. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
