OKC Redhawks Game Notes September 4th

September 4, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release

TONIGHT: The Oklahoma City RedHawks begin their final series of the year with the first of a 5-game, 4-day set at Memphis. OKC came from behind to beat New Orleans 4-3 in 10 innings last night to take 3 of 4 from the Zephyrs. The RedHawks lead the season series with Memphis 6-5, but the teams have not met since early June. OKC is slated to start righthander Kris Benson, making his first appearance against Memphis as a RedHawk. The Redbirds counter with righthander Lance Lynn, who has pitched at Class A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield this season and will make his Triple-A debut.

INTO THE THICK OF A RACE: The RedHawks, mathematically eliminated from playoff hopes on Sunday, will have a bearing on the division championship in the American North. Memphis begins play today a half-game ahead of Nashville. Iowa is 2.5 games back. OKC has 5 games to play in Memphis, with a doubleheader on Saturday to make up for an April 12 rainout. Nashville has a standard 4-game series in New Orleans while Iowa finishes at home with a 4-gamer against Albuquerque, winner of the American South Division.

CLOSE CALLS: OKC's 4-3 win in 10 innings last night boosted its league-leading win total in one-run games to 26. The RedHawks are 26-16 in that department. Sacramento has a 25-12 mark in one-run decisions. The RedHawks are 13-4 in extra-inning games, behind only Sacramento's 15-4 record. OKC tied last night's game 3-3 with a 2-run eighth inning, improving to a league-best 14-4 in games tied after 8 innings.

EM-BOLDENED: Outfielder Jared Bolden made his Triple-A debut last night, going 0-for-2 with 2 walks and a run scored. Bolden, promoted from low Class A Hickory Sept. 1 to fortify a roster depleted by callups, injuries and the World Cup, became the 28th position player and 60th RedHawk overall when he started last night's game in left field.

BULLPEN AIRTIGHT: The RedHawks' bullpen did not allow a run in the final 3 games against New Orleans, tossing 7.1 scoreless innings. Reliever Mike Hinckley has an 11-inning scoreless streak spanning August and September.

HUFFMAN KEEPS HITTING: Royce Huffman owns a 6-game hitting streak, during which he's 8-for-23 (.348). Huffman has also hit safely in 13 of his last 14, going 17-for-43 (.395) with 1 homer and 5 RBIs in that span. He has more doubles (29) than any other RedHawk has extra-base hits (excluding Travis Metcalf's stats with Omaha).

DIVISION PLAY A WASH: OKC finished with a 24-24 record against division foes, split 12-12 home and away. The RedHawks are 28-31 against the American North, 9-18 on the road.

BETTER THAN 2008: The RedHawks ended their home schedule 41-31, which tops the 40-32 mark for last year's division and American Conference champions. The 2008 RedHawks, however, went 36-36 on the road, while this year's club is 27-40 away from home.

REVOLVING DOOR: The RedHawks had numerous moves this week, receiving pitchers Mike Wood and Chris Cooper, plus outfielders Kevin Thompson and Justin Leone as free agents. Zach Zaneski and Jared Bolden were promoted from within the system. Departing were Ryan Freel (released), Brandon McCarthy and Esteban German (activated from rehab), Brandon Boggs (recalled and placed on the 60-day DL), and Guillermo Moscoso, Warner Madrigal and catcher Kevin Richardson (September callups).
