Redbirds Move into First-Place Tie with 2-1 Win

Metairie, La. - Jermaine Curtis hit a game-winning sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Adron Chambers for a last at-bat 2-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs in the finale of a four-gamer series on Thursday night at Zephyr Field.

Combined with Omaha's fourth consecutive to Iowa, Memphis (67-73) moves into first-place tie in the PCL American Northern Division with four games remaining to play in the regular season. Iowa improves to two games back in third place. Memphis won the season series over both division rivals and owns the tiebreaker.

The Redbirds split the four-game series with the Zephyrs and finished with a 9-7 series win in the sixteen-game season series.

It was the Redbirds 15th last at-bat win this season and fourth consecutive by a game-winning sacrifice fly.

Memphis starter Carlos Martinez hurled seven dominating innings in a no-decision, allowing one run on five hits. The right-hander walked one and struck out a season-high nine batters. He also added a base hit and sacrifice bunt from the dish.

Kyle Jensen gave New Orleans its only run in the game in the bottom of the second inning with a his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot off Martinez over the center field wall.

Memphis tied the game in the next frame on a single by Ryan Jackson. Catcher Audry Perez led off with a seven-pitch walk, moved to second on a Martinez sacrifice bunt, and came home to score as on a Jackson hit up the middle as New Orleans catcher Kyle Skipworth botched a catch while attempting to block home plate.

Romak got things started in the ninth with a one-out double and was replaced by Chambers to pinch run. After a pair of walks by pitcher James Leverton (3-2), Curtis lifted the game-winning fly ball to right field as Chambers slide head first under the tag.

Reliever Lee Stoppelman picked up the win in his Triple-A debut with a strikeout over a scoreless eighth inning. Jorge Rondon collected his first save of the season with a perfect ninth.

New Orleans starter Brad Hand tossed his longest outing of the season for a no-decision, scattering five hits for one run in 7 1/3 innings.

The Redbirds conclude their season-ending 13-game road trip with a four-game series at the PCL American Southern Division-champion Oklahoma City RedHawks (Triple-A Astros) beginning at 7:05 pm CT on Friday night. Memphis has yet to announce a starter. Oklahoma City will start Jake Buchanan (5-4, 3.88).
