Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Des Moines, IA - Casey Coleman was solid through six innings and four different players drove in a run to lead Iowa to a 4-2 decision over Omaha Thursday night in the last regular season road game of the 2013 campaign. The Storm Chasers were swept in a four-game series for the first time this season to fall to 67-73 and into a first place tie with Memphis, a 2-1 winner over New Orleans, in the American Conference North Division. The Redbirds essentially lead by virtue of taking the season series from the Storm Chasers, who will have to win the division title outright to advance to the postseason.
Julio Borbon singled to start the home first and scored on a double by Dave Sappelt, who came around on a one-out single by Edgar Gonzalez to make it a 2-0 game just four batters into the frame against Yordano Ventura, making his third start against Iowa this season. Two more singles would load the bases but the hard-throwing right-hander was able to avoid further damage by striking out Mike Olt and Jae-Hoon Ha to end the inning.
Veteran first baseman Carlos Pena, playing in his first game since signing with Kansas City, drew a lead-off walk in the fifth and moved to second on a Pedro Ciriaco single before both runners advanced on a Manny Pina sacrifice bunt. However, Coleman was able to keep the visitors off the board by striking out Gorkys Hernandez and getting Irving Falu to fly out.
Brad Nelson, Gonzalez and Ty Wright singled to load the bases with nobody out in the sixth for Edwin Maysonet, who battled to a 12th pitch before delivering a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 and spell the end of the line for Ventura, who took the loss after he was charged with four runs on eight hits while walking one and fanning five. Maikel Cleto took over and gave up a scoring fly ball to Olt that extended the lead to four.
Pena made his next at-bat count, as he belted a two-run opposite field home run to left field to slice the deficit in half and knock Coleman out of the game. Alberto Cabreara, Marcos Mateo and Eduardo Sanchez combined to retire the next nine hitters in a row to sew up Iowa's 12th win in the 16-game season series and pull the Cubs to within two games of the division lead.
Omaha will send right-hander Clay Mortensen to the mound in Friday night's series opener against Round Rock southpaw Michael Kirkman. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
