November 26, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Saturday recalled goaltender Jared Coreau from the Grand Rapids Griffins while the Griffins recalled goaltender Cal Heeter from the ECHL's Toledo Walleye.
Should he debut with the Wings, Coreau will become the 158th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL. He was recalled twice last season but did not play.
Coreau, 25, has started 13 of 16 games this season for the Griffins and ranks among the AHL's leaders with eight wins (T2nd), a 2.39 goals against average (T15th), a 0.923 save percentage (T13th), 778:17 minutes (3rd) and 371 saves (2nd).
The 6-foot-6 netminder recorded his first shutout of the season and 10th of his career on Nov. 11 to tie for third on the franchise's all-time list. Coreau continues to climb in the club's goaltending record book with 53 wins (7th), 90 games played (7th), 5199:38 minutes (5th) and 2,473 saves (5th).
A native of Perth, Ontario, Coreau is coming off a career year in 2015-16 when he established himself among the AHL's elite with 29 wins (T4th), a 2.43 GAA (10th), a 0.922 save percentage (T4th), 2,741:36 minutes (4th), 1,314 saves (5th) and six shutouts (3rd).
The Northern Michigan University product has also played parts of two seasons for the ECHL's Toledo Walleye (2013-15), showing a 6-16-6 record and a 3.75 GAA.
Heeter, 28, is a perfect 8-0 between the pipes for the Walleye, the only unbeaten among qualified goaltenders in the ECHL. The 6-foot-4 netminder ranks 14th in GAA (2.67), ties for 15th in save percentage (0.912) and has one shutout as he has helped the Walleye post the best record in the league at 14-3.
Heeter is returning to North America this season after spending the latter half of the 2014-15 season with Zagreb Medvescak (KHL) and then splitting the 2015-16 campaign between Medvescak and Hamburg (DEL). In 28 games in the KHL, Heeter showed a 9-11-4 record and a 2.76 GAA. Closing last season with Hamburg, Heeter was 11-8 with a 3.00 GAA and a 0.900 save percentage.
Heeter's last AHL appearance came Nov. 8, 2014, as a member of the Toronto Marlies. He has played in 77 career AHL games since 2012-13, including 76 with Adirondack, and posted a 28-41-6 record to go along with a 2.78 GAA and four shutouts.
The native of St. Louis played four seasons at Ohio State University (2008-12) and still ranks among the school's all-time leaders with 39 wins (9th), a 2.58 GAA (4th) and a 0.915 save percentage (4th). Heeter also won a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2013 IIHL World Championships.
The Griffins are 6-3 in the month of November and currently place second in the Central Division. Grand Rapids travels to defending Calder Cup champion Cleveland tonight at 7 p.m.
