MONSTERS GAME SUMMARY: Monsters Fall to Griffins, 6-2
November 26, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday at The Q by a final score of 6-2. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 6-10-1-1 overall this season and with a .389 points percentage, currently sit alone in eighth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Griffins grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening stanza on Friday thanks to a power-play score from Martin Frk at 12:05 and an even-strength tally by Tomas Nosek just under two minutes later at 13:53. The Monsters responded in a big way, however, just prior to the first intermission as Oliver Bjorkstrand scalded home an extra-man one-timer from the left point at 19:28 thanks to feeds from John Ramage and Daniel Zaar.
In the middle frame, Cleveland scrapped back to tie the game at 4:02 when Brett Gallant crashed the net and, thanks to assists from Zaar and Jordan Maletta, collected his second marker in as many nights. The Griffins bounced back quickly though, as former Monster Matthew Ford buried a shorthanded score at 13:03 of the frame and Kyle Criscuolo netted a tip-in tally at 16:55 to make it 4-2 Grand Rapids.
In the final period, the Griffins bolstered their lead with an even-strength Dominic Turgeon goal at 14:44 and polished off a 6-2 victory with a Matt Lorito power-play tally at 17:02 of the final frame. Joonas Korpisalo allowed four goals on 17 shots for the Monsters to fall to 1-3-1 in net for Cleveland this year before being pulled in favor of Anton Forsberg mid-way through the second period. Forsberg stopped 13 of 15 pucks in relief the rest of the way while Eddie Pasquale improved to 3-1-0 between the pipes for the Griffins by virtue of a 29-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Wednesday trip to Grand Rapids for Cleveland's third consecutive clash vs. the Griffins with full coverage, live from Van Andel Arena, underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
