Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY. - The Binghamton Senators scored late in the second period and early in the third to start a comeback but eventually fell to the visiting Syracuse Crunch, 4-2, in front of 3,533 fans at Floyd L Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night.
The Syracuse Crunch scored with 10 seconds left in the first period to take the early 1-0 lead. Mike Halmo brought the puck into the B-Sens' zone up the center before passing to Michael Bournival on the right side who sent a cross ice pass to Cameron Darcy. Darcy passed back to Halmo who was in front of Andrew Hammond and scored his fourth goal of the season.
Syracuse scored two goals over 15 seconds in the middle frame to increase their lead. The first goal came two seconds in the power play after a faceoff win by the Crunch. Matt Taormina took a shot right off the draw that went over the shoulder of Hammond. Adam Erne and Tanner Richard picked up the assists on Taormina's fourth of the year.
Halmo collected his second of the night at the 8:44 mark after Adam Comrie took a shot from the left point that deflected. Bournival picked up the rebound at the left wing circle and Halmo helped get it in the goal to move the score to 3-0.
Binghamton answered with two seconds to play in the final frame with their first shorthanded goal of the year. Phil Varone forced the puck loose on a Crunch power play and had a breakaway chance that was initially stopped by Adam Wilcox. Kyle Flanagan was right behind to catch the rebound and get it past a Syracuse defender and Wilcox for his first of the year.
The B-Sens came out strong in the third period and made it a one-goal game just 1:42 in. Casey Bailey took a shot at the top of the left faceoff circle by the boards that Buddy Robinson deflected in for his third goal of the year. Varone earned the secondary assist on the goal and Binghamton trailed 3-2.
With 2:16 left in the game Syracuse pulled ahead again by two goals. Joel Vermin slid in his fifth goal of the year beating Hammond to give the Crunch a 4-2 lead with assists from Taormina and Yanni Gourde.
Hammond stopped 25 shots in the loss and Wilcox denied 30 for the win.
The B-Sens hit the road for three games this weekend beginning Friday in Providence at 7:05 p.m. Fans can tune in on U.S. Country 96.9 FM, 680 AM, iHeartRadio's website and mobile app, and AHL Live. Â
