Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Salem, VA - Salem dodged a late charge to defeat Winston-Salem 8-5 on Wednesday night at Lewis Gale Field. It is the fourth straight loss for the Dash, who still maintains a half-game lead over the Red Sox for first place in the Southern Division.

Trailing 8-3 entering the ninth inning, Winston-Salem mounted a rally against reliever Chad Povich. Joe Persichina, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, hit a one-out double and scored when Dale Mollenhauer launched a two-run home run. Tyler Kuhn and Greg Paiml singled and pinch-hitter CJ Lang walked to load the bases with one out. The Red Sox turned to the bullpen once again and brought in Jason Blackey, who struck out Seth Loman and Justin Greene to end the threat and the game. Blackey collected his fourth save in as many opportunities.

The Dash manufactured a run with a two-out rally against Eammon Portice in the first inning. Paiml walked with two outs and stole second base. Brent Morel delivered an RBI single to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead. The Red Sox answered back in the bottom of the inning as Chi-Hsuan Lin and Aaron Reza led off with back-to-back singles and Tim Federowicz registered an RBI sacrifice fly that evened the score at one.

The Dash jumped back in front in the top of the second inning when Persichina plated John Curtis from second base with an RBI single. Once again, Salem countered with their own two-out rally that produced three runs off Miguel Socolovich in the bottom of the third. Brad Correll, Anthony Rizzo and Chih-Hsien Chiang connected on consecutive run-scoring hits to hand the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.

Socolovich (3-3), a regular out of the bullpen and making just his third start of the season, only lasted three innings and surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits to take the loss.

Salem continued to pour it on against the Dash bullpen with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chaing and Zach Borowiak tallied RBI doubles and one of three Winston-Salem errors allowed another run to score that stretched the Red Sox advantage to 7-2. Chaing finished with a season-high three doubles and added two RBI.

Both teams exchanged a run in the seventh inning as Persichina registered an RBI ground out and Jon Hee added an RBI single for Salem. Portice (7-7) worked five solid innings and held the Winston-Salem to two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts to garner the win.

The Dash and Red Sox conclude their four-game series on Thursday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Winston-Salem will send RHP Jacob Rasner (3-5, 4.17) to the mound, while the Red Sox will counter with RHP Stephen Fife (2-2, 4.96). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Dash returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Friday, August 28 when they host a three-game series against the Lynchburg Hillcats. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
