August 26, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals play Myrtle Beach in the third game of their final four-game set from BB&T Coastal Park this evening beginning at 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans, who currently have the lowest winning percentage overall in the CL, are currently one game back for playoff spot in the Southern Division. The P-Nats are still on the outside looking in as they still trail the Wilmington Blue Rocks by 2.5 games in the Northern Division after yesterday's defeat paired with Wilmington's victory over Lynchburg. The Hillcats, who won the first half title by 7.0 full games were officially eliminated from the second half crown with their 4-2 loss yesterday. *The Blue Rocks' Magic Number for the Second Half Division title is down to 11.*
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTERS: RHP Erik Cordier, 23, was originally drafted by Kansas City in the 2nd round of the 2004 Draft. He was acquired by the Braves on 7/23/2007 in exchange infielder Tony Pena Jr. Cordier missed all of 2007 following Tommy John surgery but came back to the hill last year for a combined 12 appearances between the GCL and Low-A Rome Braves of the South Atlantic League. He showed great progress in the road back from Tommy John surgery with his fastball regaining its jump and touching the mid-90s on the radar gun combined with the continued reclamation of his curveball. The Du Pere, Wisconsin resident enjoyed his best outing of 2008 when he threw 6.1 innings of shutout baseball and only allowed two hits on August 23 in a 1-0 win over Savannah.
In 2009, Cordier lost his first two decisions before enjoying a personal three-game winning streak over his four appearances from May 26-June 16. He capped off that stretch by throwing the first complete game shutout of his career by tossing 7.0 scoreless frames in a triumph over Lynchburg on June 16. After a pretty good first half for the Pelicans (3-2, 2.89), Cordier has gone 3-4 for the Birds including a pair of losses over his last three starts. He helped Myrtle avoid a sweep in their three-game set with Potomac from July 7-9 when he went 7.0 frames in the finale allowing just two runs on five hits in a 6-5 Pelicans victory on July 9. While his command sometimes has escaped him this year (61BB/75K in 106.2IP), Cordier has been tough against right-handers all year posting just a .228 BBA.
