Wilmington Sinks Lynchburg In 11 Innings

August 26, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Paulo Orlando hit a two-run single in the top of the 11th to lift Wilmington to a 5-3 victory over Lynchburg in 11 innings at City Stadium Wednesday night. The Hillcats will try to salvage a win in the finale of the four-game series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.

Wednesday's game featured another outstanding pitchers' duel between starting pitchers as Wilmington's Michael Montgomery and Lynchburg's Jeff Locke turned in terrific outings. Montgomery did not allow run through the first two frames and Locke held the Blue Rocks scoreless through his first three innings of work. Montgomery allowed six hits and two earned runs in six innings pitched while Locke yielded an earned run on six hits in six innings of work. Neither pitcher factored in the decision.

Lynchburg (24-35, 69-59) snapped the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. Chase d'Arnaud hit a leadoff triple down the left-field line and Josh Harrison drove in d'Arnaud with a sacrifice fly to give Lynchburg a 1-0 advantage.

Wilmington (38-20, 76-51) immediately answered with a run in the fourth. Clint Robinson hit a one-out single off Locke and scored later in the frame on Jamar Walton's two-out double that evened the score at 1-1.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when Lynchburg pushed a run across on a pair of timely hits. Kris Watts ripped a two-out double off Montgomery and Jared Keel followed with an RBI double that plated Watts and put the Cats in front 2-1.

The Cats held the lead until the top of the eighth. Anthony Seratelli hit a leadoff single off Cats reliever Tom Boleska and advanced to second on Derrick Robinson's bunt single. After Johnny Giavotella moved the runners up ninety feet with a sacrifice bunt, Mike Moustakas delivered a two-run single that gave Wilmington a 3-2 lead.

Lynchburg struck back with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the score, but let a golden scoring opportunity slip away. Jamie Romak singled off Blue Rocks reliever Barry Bowden to start the frame and Alex Presley entered the game as a pinch runner. Matt Hague followed with a single before Bowden struck out Watts. The Blue Rocks elected to issue an intentional walk to Keel, which loaded the bases.

Bowden uncorked a wild pitch with Kent Sakamoto at the plate and Presley raced home with the tying run. Sakamoto hit a ground ball to Bowden, who threw home to retire Hague at the plate. After absorbing a collision with Hague, Wilmington catcher Ryan Eigsti fired to third and Moustakas tagged out Keel to complete the 1-2-5 inning-ending double play. Lynchburg manager P. J. Forbes argued vehemently with base umpire Kolin Kline before Kline ejected him.

Cats closer R. J. Rodriguez worked two perfect frames before giving way to Moises Robles in the 11th. With a runner on and two outs, Robles gave up a single to Walton. Orlando followed with a single up the middle that scored both runners and gave Wilmington a 5-3 edge.

Blue Rocks reliever Kelvin Villa struck out the side in the bottom of the 11th to preserve the win and pick up his second save. Bowden and Villa combined to strike out seven straight Lynchburg batters in the final 2 1/3 innings of the contest.

Bowden (2-0) earned the win in relief, allowing two hits and one earned run in three innings pitched. Robles (0-2) took the loss after surrendering two hits and two earned runs in one inning of work.

Lynchburg will try to avoid being swept in the four-game series when the two teams meet in the finale Thursday night at City Stadium. Lynchburg will send LHP Justin Wilson (6-7, 4.33 ERA) to the mound while Wilmington is expected to counter with RHP Alex Caldera (4-10, 5.51 ERA). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
