Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The Boston Red Sox today sent RHP Joel Hanrahan to Pawtucket on a 30-day injury rehab assignment. He is expected to pitch in relief tonight for the PawSox at Buffalo and may also be used on Sunday afternoon when the PawSox host Columbus at McCoy. Hanrahan was placed on Boston's disabled list on April 16 (retroactive to April 14) with a right hamstring strain. He is 0-1 with 3 SV and an 11.57 ERA in 6 relief appearances for the Red Sox. He last worked on April 13 vs. Tampa Bay at Fenway Park and was removed from the game after walking the only two batters he faced (neither scored). Hanrahan, 31, was acquired from Pittsburgh along with PawSox INF Brock Holt last December for pitchers Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel, INF Ivan De Jesus, and 1B Jerry Sands. He was a National League All-Star for the Pirates each of the past two seasons. He had 40 SV in 2011 and 36 in 2012 for Pittsburgh.

The PawSox are one under the roster limit with 24 active players. OF Alex Hassan, INF Jon Hee, and OF Mitch Maier are all on the disabled list.

Pawtucket is expected to add three other pitchers in the next few days. RHP Alfredo Aceves, RHP Steven Wright, and LHP Craig Breslow (rehab) are all slated to join the PawSox.

Alfredo Aceves was optioned from Boston following their game on Wednesday. He is 1-1 with an 8.66 ERA in 5 games (3 starts) for the Red Sox this season. He was the starter and loser on Tuesday vs. Oakland in a 13-0 Red Sox defeat - 3.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO. Aceves, 31, began the 2011 season with the PawSox making just 2 starts (0-1, 5.63) in between two promotions to Boston. He remained with the Red Sox from May 6, 2011 through this April 24. He went 10-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 55 games for the Red Sox in 2011 and 2-10 with a 5.36 ERA in 69 games with 25 saves for Boston last season.

Steven Wright was optioned from Boston on Wednesday after making his Major League debut with the Red Sox on April 23. Wright came on in relief during Boston's 13-0 loss to Oakland at Fenway - 3.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO - finishing off a game that was called after 7-innings due to rain. He made two starts for the PawSox this season going 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA before being recalled to Boston on April 16 (when Hanrahan went on the DL).

Craig Breslow will have his injury rehab assignment transferred from Portland (AA) to Pawtucket this weekend. He has not pitched for Boston since spring training when he was placed on the disabled list on March 31 (retro to March 22) with left shoulder tendinitis. Breslow, 32, made his 2013 season debut when he began his 30-day injury rehab assignment this past Tuesday (April 23) as the starter for Portland in a game vs. Binghamton. He did not record an out before being lifted - 0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO. Craig may pitch in relief for the PawSox this Saturday and Sunday at McCoy. He returned to the Red Sox organization last August 31 in a trade from Arizona for RHP Matt Albers and OF Scott Podsednik. He went 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 23 relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2012. Craig pitched for the PawSox in 2007 (2-3, 4.06 in 49 RA). He is 15-17 with a 3.00 EA in 358 career Major League games (all in relief) with San Diego, Boston, Cleveland, Minnesota, Oakland, Arizona, and Boston again.
