April 26, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY -Another game, another quality start for the G-Braves' pitching staff. Sean Gilmartin pitched eight solid innings and picked up his second win of the season as the Gwinnett Braves (12-11) edged the Louisville Bats (10-12), 2-1 in the finale of the four-game series Friday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
The outing by Gilmartin was the seventh quality start by the G-Braves' rotation in the last eight games. During that span, the starters are 5-0 with an ERA of 1.17 (7 ER in 45 IP).
It looked like it might be a rough night for Gilmartin at the start. Louisville's Billy Hamilton led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored from second on a single by Emmanuel Burriss. Neftali Soto followed with a single to center to put two on with no out and the Bats sitting on a 1-0 lead. But Gilmartin would settle down and not allow another hit until the eighth inning when the Bats collected two singles against him.
Meanwhile, Louisville starter Armando Galarraga was dominating the G-Braves as well. He left the game after five stellar innings with a 1-0 lead, but in the sixth, his bullpen let him down.
In the top of that inning, Corey Wimberly stroked a lead-off single off of reliever Yohan Pino. Wimberly stole second base with one out. The next batter, Ernesto Mejia finally put Gwinnett on the board with a long two run homer to left center. It was Mejia's International League leading eighth homer of the season, his first since April 15. The clout made it 2-1, a score that would stand at the end.
Gilmartin (W, 2-0) worked eight innings for the win. He allowed five hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out three. Andrew Russell struck out the one batter he faced in the ninth. Lefty Ryan Buchter (S, 1) recorded the final two outs of the ninth, including a strikeout.
Pino (L, 0-2) worked three innings and took the loss. He gave up three hits and two earned runs. Pino walked two and struck out four. He spelled Galarraga, who deserved a much better fate. The right-hander went five scoreless innings with three hits and five strikeouts. Jose Diaz pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for Louisville.
Mejia, Wimberly, Todd Cunningham, Joey Terdoslavich, Jose Constanza and Matt Pagnozzi each had one hit in the game. The homer by Mejia gave him 23 RBI, tied for the league lead with Buffalo's Luis Jimenez. The hit by Constanza raised his hitting streak to nine games.
The Bats were paced by Burriss, who went 2-for-4.
The G-Braves' road trip now moves to Indianapolis with game one of the four game series at Victory Field set for Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Left-hander Yohan Flande (1-0, 2.86) will get his third start of the season for Gwinnett. The Indians will counter with right-hander Gerrit Cole (1-1, 2.76). Listen to the game on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
Gwinnett's next home game at Coolray Field is Thursday, May 2 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Tickets for all Gwinnett Braves home games are on sale now at the Coolray Field Box Office. Call (678) 277-0340 or visit gwinnettbraves.com for more information.
