Gilmartin Silences Bats, Leads Braves to Series Win
April 26, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Quality pitching was not hard to come by in Louisville on Friday night as the Louisville Bats (10-12) and Gwinnett Braves (12-11) took the field in their series finale. The Bats' bid to salvage a series split was foiled by the bat of Ernesto Mejia and nine sound innings from the Gwinnett pitching staff in a 2-1 loss.
Braves starter Sean Gilmartin (W, 2-0) turned in a strong eight innings of work despite only registering three strikeouts, keeping the Bats at bay by allowing only one run on five hits and two walks.
Armando Galarraga (ND, 1-1) was also impressive in his first start since his return from the Bats' disabled list, striking out five Braves and keeping them scoreless on just three hits and a walk in his five innings of work.
Billy Hamilton led off the Bats' first inning by slapping a double to left field. Second baseman Emmanuel Burriss shot a line drive through the middle of the infield in the ensuing at-bat to score Hamilton, who was running on the pitch. Burriss' RBI was his first of the season and gave the Bats a 1-0 lead.
Louisville entered play ranking last in the International League in team batting average, and could not shake their recent struggles to support their pitching staff. Despite their impressive 10-1 record when scoring first, the Bats could not recapture momentum to add on. They threatened in innings seven and eight, but both opportunities were foiled by the absence of a timely hit.
The Bats relinquished their early lead in the sixth inning after Johan Pino (L, 0-2) relieved Galarraga. Gwinnett second baseman Corey Wimberly led off the inning with a single and scored when Mejia blasted his International League-leading eighth home run of 2013, giving the Braves the only two runs they would need to hold on to the victory. Pino was also charged with his first blown save of the season and the runs were the first earned runs he had allowed between Double-A and Triple-A this season.
Gwinnett's bullpen only needed to work one inning, as Andrew Russell (H, 1) and Ryan Buchter (S, 1) combined to strike out two in the final frame and close out the series win for the Braves.
The Bats continue their homestand tomorrow evening when the Lehigh Valley IronPigs come to Louisville for a four-game set. Greg Reynolds (2-0, 3.22) is scheduled to take the ball for the Bats against IronPigs righty Tyler Cloyd (0-3, 7.65). It's Halloween Night at Louisville Slugger Field and first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
