Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Salem, VA - Winston-Salem built another early lead only to watch it evaporate late in dropping the series finale to Salem 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Gale Field. The Dash led 4-0 after two innings, but could not make it stand as they fell into a second place tie with Kinston. Both teams are 2.5 games back of first place Salem in the Southern Division. In the past four games, the Dash have held leads of three runs or more only to come away with one win in those contests.
The Dash jumped in front with a run in the first inning against Salem starting pitcher Eammon Portice. Shortstop C.J. Lang singled with one out and moved to second base when Salvador Sanchez was walked. Third baseman Brent Morel followed with an RBI single to give the Dash a 1-0 lead.
Winston-Salem's hit parade continued in the second inning with three more runs on five hits. Designated hitter Logan Johnson led off with a double and advanced to third base on Kent Gerst single. Dale Mollenahuer, Lang and Jimmy Gallagher smacked consecutive run-scoring hits to extend the Dash advantage to 4-0.
Salem trimmed their deficit in half in the third inning with a pair of runs against Dash starter Johnnie Lowe. Luis Segovia and Jon Hee singled with one out and Mike Jones walked to load the bases. Lowe walked Jason Place to bring the first run across the plate and Chih-Hsien Chiang added an RBI sacrifice fly.
Both teams would exchange a run in the fourth inning with Salem collecting a solo home run from Zak Farkes and Lang contributing an RBI double to give the Dash a 5-3 lead. Lang finished with a season-high three hits and two RBI.
The Red Sox took advantage of newly inserted reliever Henry Mabee with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead. The decisive hit came from Hee, who delivered a two-run single. On the play, the throw to the infield got loose which allowed Matt Sheely to break home from third base. The throw to the plate beat the runner, but Sheely was ruled safe by the home plate umpire. The close call ignited an argument that resulted in Mabee and Dash manager Joe McEwing getting ejected.
Salem's bullpen would make the lead stand as Robert Coello (2-0) tossed two shutout innings without allowing a hit and striking out three to earn the win. Red Sox closer Derrick Loop recorded the final three outs to garner his fifth save of the season. Mabee (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing four runs (two earned) without recording an out prior to being ejected.
The Dash will begin a seven-game home stand on Monday, May 18 with the first of four against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at 7 p.m. at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park through June 17 and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
