Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg took the rubber match of a three-game set with Wilmington with a 4-0 victory at City Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Matt McSwain earned the victory by tossing six scoreless frames.
The Hillcats took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Pedro Alvarez singled home Jordy Mercer to give Lynchburg a 1-0 lead. The scored stayed the same until the bottom of the fifth inning when Matt Hague brought in the second run of the game with an RBI ground out to make it 2-0.
Wilmington was held at bay offensively thanks to an outstanding start by right-hander Matt McSwain. The second-year Hillcats blanked the Blue Rocks for six innings.
A pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth gave the Cats some insurance by pushing the lead to four. Two errors by Wilmington in the inning aided the two runs that scored. Alex Presley singled in a run in the frame to pick up his ninth RBI of the season.
McSwain (3-1) earned the win for Lynchburg (23-13) and starter Mario Santiago (1-4) took the loss for Wilmington (17-19). The win in the rubber match gives the Hillcats four straight series victories and helps keep them in sole possession of first place in the Northern Division and the best record in the Carolina League. The shutout was the second by the Cats pitching staff this season.
The Hillcats next hit the road for a seven-game series that begins on Monday in Frederick. The road trip continues a stretch of 13 out of 16 away from Calvin Falwell Field. The first game of four against the Keys starts at 7:00 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium. Left-hander Justin Wilson (2-3, 5.86) will get the nod for the Cats opposite left-hander Nate Nery (0-1, 3.00) for Frederick.
Tune-in for all the live action beginning at 6:40 p.m. on KD Country and 96.9 FM in Roanoke. You can also listen in on www.kdcountry.com throughout the entire 2009 Hillcats season!
