Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, Va. - Despite taking an early lead, the Dash could not overcome 11 hits from the Mudcats offense, falling 5-2 against Carolina on Sunday at Haley Toyota Field.
After a scoreless first inning, Winston-Salem (22-14, 63-44) plated the first run of the game against Red Sox starter Darwinzon Hernandez (8-5) in the second. Gavin Sheets started the frame with a single, and Ti'Quan Forbes followed a single to left to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Zach Remillard stroked a single just two batters later, and Yeyson Yrizarri drove home Sheets with a groundout to third.
However, the Red Sox (18-19, 50-55) quickly tied the contest in the bottom of the inning. With one out and nobody on, Jerry Downs crushed a solo homer to right against Luis Martinez (6-6), who was handed the loss for the second consecutive start.
In the third, Salem took the lead for good. Following back-to-back singles from Chris Madera and Tyler Hill, Brett Netzer lofted an RBI single into shallow right to make it a 2-1 game. Later in the inning, Roldani Baldwin grounded an RBI single to right, and Michael Osinski drove in the inning's final run with a two-out, run-scoring single to left.
Laz Rivera helped cut the deficit to two in the fifth with a two-out, RBI double to plate Remillard, but that would be the last run of the day for the Dash. Hernandez picked up the victory by tossing five innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven.
In the loss, Tyler Johnson pitched two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while striking out two. Meanwhile, Mike Morrison registered two innings out of the bullpen, with his lone blemish being a solo shot from Madera.
Following a league-wide off day on Monday, the Dash will kick off a three-game series against the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday at BB&T Ballpark at 7 p.m. Left-hander Kyle Kubat (4-1, 2.31 ERA) will take the hill for the Dash in the opener. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
Promotions for the Dash's three-game homestand include a Free Food Tuesday, with free hot dogs and hamburgers available through the seventh inning, Pups in the Park on Wednesday, presented by North Davidson Animal Hospital and Camel City Goods, and a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday.
