SALEM, VA - Darwinzon Hernandez struck out seven batters en route to his fifth win of the month, and Jerry Downs and Chris Madera both homered to lift the Salem Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash on Sunday at Haley Toyota Field.

The Sox (18-19, 50-55) picked up their second series victory of the season against the Dash, and built a bit of momentum heading to the final month of the season. Winston-Salem (22-15, 63-44) bounced into three double plays for the second consecutive game, and didn't score any runs after the fifth inning.

The Dash opened the scoring in the top of the second inning against Hernandez (W, 8-5), who gave up consecutive singles to Gavin Sheets and Ti'Quan Forbes to open the frame. Hernandez recovered to fan JJ Muno, but a single by Zach Remillard loaded the bases. Yeyson Yrizarri hit a chopper to the left side for an RBI groundout to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead.

Salem drew level in the bottom of the inning against Dash starter Luis Martinez (L, 6-6). With one out and the bases empty, Downs pounced on a first-pitch fastball and sent it soaring over the wall in right for a solo homer. It was Downs' 10th dinger of the year, and it tied the game up at 1-1.

The Sox burst ahead in the bottom of the third. With one out, Madera singled and moved up to third on a single by Tyler Hill. Brett Netzer joined the hit parade with an RBI single to plate Madera. C.J. Chatham struck out, but Roldani Baldwin cracked an RBI single of his own to score Hill before Downs worked a walk to load the bases. Michael Osinski didn't disappoint, slashing a single through the left side to score Netzer and give Salem a 4-1 lead.

Winston-Salem earned a run back in the top of the fifth. Remiillard drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a passed ball by Baldwin. Yrizarri fanned and Nolan Brown flew out to left, but Laz Rivera ripped a double to the left-field corner, cutting Salem's lead to 4-2.

Salem earned that run back in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and reliever Mike Morrison on the hill, Madera yanked a fly over the wall in left for his second homer of the year. The solo shot ran the lead back to 5-2, and relievers Hunter Smith (H, 4) and Algenis Martinez (S, 3) stifled the Dash through the end of the game.

Hernandez allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in five frames, whiffing seven. Smith dealt two scoreless frames, whiffing one and allowing a runner aboard only on an error. Martinez allowed two hits and struck out one in two shutout innings of relief to notch the save.

The Sox will enjoy a day off on Monday before they kick off a six-game road swing with a three-game set at the Lynchburg Hillcats. Righty Kevin McAvoy will make the start for the Sox against Lynchburg right-hander Zach Plesac. First pitch from Calvin Falwell Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
