RED SOX TAKE MIDDLE MATCH 7-2

The Red Sox broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on Saturday and never looked back, as Salem defeated Winston-Salem 7-2 at Haley Toyota Field. With the game tied in the home half of the fifth inning, Chris Madera reached second base on a bunt single and a throwing error from the third baseman Yeyson Yrizarri. Two batters later, Brett Netzer smacked an RBI double against John Parker to right-center to put the Red Sox ahead 2-1. The next batter, C.J. Chatham, stroked an RBI single to center to make it a 3-1 contest. Salem would add four runs in the eighth to pull away for good. Meanwhile, Tanner Houck earned the win by tossing six innings of one-run ball.

LOOK AT THIS MERCEDES

After going 2-for-4 on Saturday, Yermin Mercedes has upped his second-half average to .327. A former Nationals and Orioles farmhand, Mercedes is now posting a .898 OPS after the All-Star Break. The 25-year-old was selected by the White Sox in the Minor League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December of 2017. Over his Minor League career, which has spanned 493 games and eight seasons, Mercedes is posting a .299/.364/.470 batting line with 54 homers and 287 RBIs.

BLAKE THE GREAT

Thanks to his 2-for-4 performance on Saturday, Blake Rutherford has now posted a season-best 12-game hitting streak, during which he is registering an average of .353 (18-for-51) with 10 runs scored and six RBIs. A former first-round pick by the Yankees, Rutherford was traded over to the White Sox just over a year ago in July of 2017 as part of a four-player package. He is currently tied for the league lead in hits (108) and ranks second in RBIs (66).
