March 5, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York Red Bulls News Release

The New York Red Bulls (2-0-0, 6 pts.) defeated Toronto FC (0-1-1, 1 pt.), 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field.

New York won their first two games of the season on the road for the first time in franchise history. It was the fourth time in franchise history the Red Bulls won their opening two matches of a season and first two road games of a season.

The Red Bulls have tallied three goals or more in back-to-back games to open the season, surpassing their 2021 season total (1). It was the first time New York recorded back-to-back games with at least three goals since April 28-May 5, 2018 when they defeated LA Galaxy, 3-2, and NYCFC, 4-0 in consecutive games.

New York has extended its MLS regular-season unbeaten streak to five matches (3-0-2) and have outscored their opponents, 9-3, during the stretch dating back to last year.

Lewis Morgan scored back-to-back goals in a seven-minute span to give New York an early 2-0 lead in the first half.

Toronto's Jesus Jimenez dribbled through a couple Red Bulls defenders and cut the deficit to one, 2-1, in the 35th minute.

Morgan and Aaron Long found the back of the net in a two-minute span to raise the lead to three, 4-1, in the 42nd minute.

Morgan recorded his first career hat trick and raised his career total to 10 MLS regular-season goals. He became the Red Bulls first player to tally a first-half hat trick since Bradley Wright-Phillips on May 28, 2016 against Toronto FC. Morgan was also the first Red Bulls player to tally a hat trick since BWP on September 6, 2018 at D.C. United.

Long scored his ninth career MLS regular-season and first since October 28, 2020 versus New England.

Patryk Klimala recorded three assists in a game for the first time in his career. He became the eighth different Red Bull to accomplish the feat and the first since Thierry Henry on July 12, 2014 vs. Columbus Crew SC.

Frankie Amaya tallied two assists to tally at least one assist in back-to-back matches. He raised his season total to three through the first two matches. Amaya had tallied just one assist through his first 62 matches of his career prior to 2022.

Omir Fernandez tallied an assist to extend his point streak to two matches and tie his season-high total of two.

Zach Ryan made his MLS debut in the 90th minute as he came on as a sub for Klimala.

Tom Edwards made his Red Bulls return as he came on for captain Aaron Long in the 66th minute.

Head Coach Gerhard Struber earned his 15th MLS regular-season win to improve his record at New York to 15-14-9. His 15 MLS regular-season wins move him to sole possession of seventh place in franchise history.

New York has had five different goal scorers to begin the season.

The Red Bulls improved to 93-19-24 when scoring the first goal of the match since they implemented their high-press system in 2015 and 2-0-0 in 2022.

New York opens a two-match homestand, beginning with their home opener against Minnesota United on Sunday, March 13 Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on MSG, MSG GO, and New York Red Bulls Radio in English and Spanish via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
