Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA -Atlanta United fell 3-0 on the road at Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night. Atlanta dominated possession throughout the match but wasn't able to find a breakthrough in the first road contest of the 2022 season.
Atlanta's first scoring chance came in the eighth minute when George Campbell dribbled into the final third down the center of the pitch. Campbell fed Tyler Wolff on the right side and the Homegrown took one touch into the box before going for the far post forcing Colorado's William Yarbrough into a save.
Against the run of play, Colorado struck first in the 33rd minute. Diego Rubio scored from a header inside the six-yard box after Michael Barrios crossed the ball from the right wing. At the stroke of halftime, Atlanta nearly found the equalizer when Andrew Gutman played a low cross to an open Josef Martinez in the box. Martinez's first touch was slightly behind him and Colorado cleared the ball to keep the 1-0 lead at the break.
The Rapids doubled their lead three minutes into the second half. Rubio won a duel on the right side and crossed the ball into the box where Jonathan Lewis volleyed past Brad Guzan from 10 yards out. Atlanta nearly scored in the 53rd minute when Campbell's header was saved by Yarbrough from close range.
After Atlanta was reduced to 10-men late, Andre Shinyashiki scored Colorado's third in the 87th minute to make the final score 3-0 in favor of the home side.
Atlanta (1-1-0, 3 points) returns to action Sunday, March 13 when it hosts Charlotte FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (4:30 p.m., FS1/FOX Deportes, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).
