Red Bulls Claw Back To Earn 1-1 Tie Against Revolution

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (Sept. 18, 2009) - A second half John Wolyniec goal helped give the New York Red Bulls a 1-1 tie against Eastern Conference rival, the New England Revolution, on Friday night at Giants Stadium. New York wrapped up a five-game homestand with a 2-2-1 record and is now 4-17-5 (17 pts.) this season.

New England put its name on the scoreboard in the 13th minute. Steve Ralston found Sainey Nyassi on the right wing. Nyassi gathered the ball, juked into the box and blasted a short-angle shot past goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul and into the top corner of the net.

The Red Bulls' best scoring chance of the half came in the 38th minute. Macoumba Kandji made space for himself on the right wing and curled a cross to forward Wolyniec, who had a step on his defender at the six yard box and nodded the ball just wide.

Four minutes later, a Shalrie Joesph delivery into the box was deflected by a leaping Andrew Boyens and skipped just past the left post. Red Bulls midfielder Luke Sassano got on the end of a Dane Richards pass soon after and volleyed it over the net.

The Red Bulls appealed for a penalty kick three minutes into the second half. Wolyniec was able to get free deep into the Revolution box and looked like he was taken down from behind by New England defender Emmanuel Osei. However, referee Hilario Grajeda did not blow his whistle, as the play continued.

Coundoul kept the Revolution's lead at one in the 62nd minute when he sprawled out to save a Kevin Alston shot after the New England defender played a give-and-go with Joseph.

Wolyniec tied the game for New York in the 69th minute. Substitute Albert Celades passed the ball to Kandji in the middle of the field. Kandji took the ball and found Richards on the right and his low cross into the box was slid in from close range by an unmarked Wolyniec. Wolyniec was injured on the play and left the game with a left ankle sprain.

Both teams pressed to earn the three points. With nine minutes left, Danleigh Borman laid the ball off to Kandji and the forward blasted it high from 15-yards-out. Moments later, Nyassi volleyed a long corner kick into the side netting.

Kandji had a golden chance to win the game in the 90th minute. Celades was able to find Kandji in New England's defensive end and the Senegalese forward quickly turned on Osei and drove towards goal. With only goalkeeper Matt Reis to beat, Kandji hooked his attempt past the left post.

Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel missed the match due to a right ankle sprain while defender Carlos Johnson was serving a one-game suspension.

The Red Bulls kick off a three-game road swing when they take on Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center at 10:30 PM ET on Saturday, Sept. 26 (TV: FSC, FSE; Radio: WADO 1280 AM).
